Perfectly played Piano Concerto by Ravel performed by pianist @avanyupianist supported by the @vmocanada with Conductor Ken Hsieh @conductorken
It was great to share this experience with my concert buddy @brinasun4326 who always coincidentally appears at the same obscure concerts as me and always in the front row right by the piano keyboard to see the pianists' performances. Brian is also an excellent concert pianist whom I now consider as a friend.

First rehearsal underway

Side note - want to point out how our conducter is so passionate, orchestra members can feel it... Just look at all the sweat 💦😅

Exorcism in the middle of the night?!

Wiki - a 1915 ballet where a woman dances wildly around a campfire to banish her jealous husband’s ghost.

Definitely not what I thought it was about...

Worthwhile to do some research before your concerts @everyonewhostudywithmebeforeandcanseethispost (ikyk) and @myself

Good to know I guess. Give me some ghost cash or unlimited psl, I will leave happily 🎃

PRPOV: how to be musical 💭🎶

The problem: This phrase nestled right between fast and energetic opening and closing.

The question: do I play this middle section slow and dramatic, or do I keep it in the same elegant, forward-moving character as the rest...

Wiki - Ravel originally wrote this piece as a memorial to his friends who died in WWI (this movement specifically for two brothers). Yet, he wrote a lively peasant dance, famously saying, "The dead are sad enough, in their eternal silence." He was also notorious for hating overly sentimental playing.

So, finding that sweet spot between pastoral nostalgia and classical restraint is hard 🫠

I always have trouble making decisions...

Dear students and parents,

The reason I’m taking the whole day off on Sunday, September 20 is to attend this concert!

The VMO is a wonderful orchestra, and the program includes one of my favourites—Ravel’s Piano Concerto!

Let’s go together! I’ll arrange the tickets, so please let me know if you’d like to join me!

🎶 Music has a way of expressing what words sometimes cannot, but it also has a beautiful way of bringing people together and creating friendships that span decades ❤️

Today I’m celebrating my dear friend, the wonderful Maestro Kenneth Hsieh @conductorken, conductor of the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra @vmocanada 🎼

Ken and I share so many memories dating all the way back to our university days, when we were both so young, and it has been such a thrill to watch his exciting career explode over the years 🎼✨

For those of you in Vancouver, I also want to encourage you to experience the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra in concert. I’ll be sharing their upcoming performances as they are announced. Their concerts feature wonderful musicians, exciting soloists, and opportunities for some of our finest young artists to perform 🎻🎹

There is something very special about friendships that travel with us through the different seasons of our lives, and music has been woven through so many of those memories for Ken and me.

Cheers to music, to friendship, to decades of memories, and to you today, my dear friend Ken! 🥂🎶❤️
