Read that headline again. Then notice how reasonable the NYT makes it sound.

Trump canceled the livestream. He did not cancel the state-sponsored firing squad. On December 3, the U.S. military still plans to shoot a man to death at Fort Hood. It will be the first military execution since 1961 and the first Army firing squad since 1945. The last public execution in this country was 1936, when 20,000 people watched Kentucky hang a 26-year-old Black man named Rainey Bethea. We stopped out of shame. The firing squad was the throwback before the camera ever was.

Now notice how this feels. Two weeks ago the firing squad was the outrage. Then came the camera, and the firing squad became the baseline. Now the camera is gone, and a government shooting a man to death reads as the moderate option. Nothing about the execution changed. Only our sense of where normal sits.

This is the pattern, and it works on all of us. Threaten the unthinkable. Retreat to the merely terrible. Collect credit for “restraint.” The Overton window is supposed to describe what a society will consider. He runs it in reverse, shrinking what we’re still able to be shocked by, one spectacle at a time. We saw it with ICE this year. Shock and awe until we were numb. The killings kept going while the attention drained away.

Anyone who has lived with an abuser knows the shape of this. The threat, the partial reprieve, the gratitude you’re supposed to feel for a cruelty slightly smaller than the one promised. It’s a control tactic, and it only works if we accept the new baseline.

So, no. The death penalty is still racist, still arbitrary, still deadly inaccurate, still cruel and unusual, and still barbaric with the cameras off. States are still doing this: South Carolina shot three men last year, and in one case the autopsy showed the bullets mostly missed his heart.

Trump didn’t do something good. He stopped doing one extra bad thing on top of a bad thing. December 3 is still on the calendar, and the U.S. machinery of death is still fully operational. Hold the line where it was.

Many women who think they can't tolerate progesterone are actually reacting to synthetic progestogens.

This week on my @drlouisenewsonpodcast, biochemist Dr Phyllis Bronson joined me to talk about progesterone, a hormone that has often been forgotten for far too long. Phyllis's doctoral research looked at the molecular differences between bioidentical progesterone and the synthetic progestogens found in many contraceptive pills and older types of HRT, and she explains why even a small change to a molecule can have such a big effect on the body.

We talk about progesterone as the 'molecule of calm', how it works differently when it's used through the skin or taken orally, and why it's often the first hormone to decline, sometimes as early as our 20s and 30s. I see women in my clinic whose lives have been transformed when they're given the right type of progesterone at the right dose for them, because progesterone has such important effects on the brain as well as the womb.

Listen to the full conversation now via the link in my bio.
