If you visit Gràcia during its famous neighbourhood festivals, you might notice that the decorations are not the only thing attracting attention.
Among the colourful streets and crowded squares, you’ll also find messages reflecting the strong cultural and political identity of the neighbourhood.
The banners around the neighbourhood read:
“Benvingudes a la Vila de Gràcia. Això no és Espanya. Som Països Catalans.”
“Welcome to the Vila de Gràcia. This is not Spain. We are the Catalan Countries.”
“Gràcia per viure, no per al turisme.”
“Gràcia is for living, not for tourism.”
These messages reflect some of the cultural and political views you may encounter in Barcelona.
Barcelona is a city with many different identities, opinions and ways of seeing itself.
It’s also worth mentioning that this video only shows a very small part of the festivities, filmed in one small square. The Gràcia Festival takes place across many streets and squares throughout the neighbourhood, with decorations, activities and different scenes continuing far beyond what you see in this video.
So if you’re visiting Gràcia to experience the festivities, enjoy the streets, the decorations and the atmosphere, but please respect the locals who live here and remember that this is their neighbourhood first.
