the Voice of the Ocean is only the beginning

BLAH-BLAH-BLAH PEAKED IN THE UK 40 YEARS AGO TODAY

“I'm not the kind of guy who dresses like a king...”

Released just over 40 years ago in the UK on Monday 29th September 1986, Iggy Pop’s Blah-Blah-Blah charted at its peak position of #43 on this day, 11th October.

Produced by David Bowie and David Richards, it fared better in New Zealand and Switzerland where it was a top 20 release, and in Sweden it peaked at #3.

The UK position was disappointing, considering both Iggy and Bowie fans would have been potential purchasers.

The pair’s previous collaborations, The Idiot and Lust For Life, were top 30 albums in the UK in 1977.

Six of the ten tracks on Blah-Blah-Blah were co-written with Bowie, though the biggest hit single from the album was a cover version: Real Wild Child (Wild One), which reached #10 and gave Iggy two Top Of The Pops’ appearances in January 1987. The only other performance on the show was Beside You in May 1994.

These are the five singles in order of release: Cry for Love, Real Wild Child (Wild One), Shades, Fire Girl, and Isolation.

Despite being blighted somewhat by the 80s production, it's actually a fine album, mainly due to the quality of the songs. Mention should be made of guitarist, ex-Sex Pistol Steve Jones, who also co-wrote three of the songs.

If you’re not familiar with Blah-Blah-Blah, you really should give it a try.

Personnel
Iggy Pop – lead vocals
Kevin Armstrong – guitar, backing vocals
Erdal Kızılçay – synthesizer, bass guitar, drums, string arrangements, backing vocals
Steve Jones – guitar solo on "Cry for Love"
David Bowie – backing vocals

Production
David Bowie – producer, mixing
David Richards – producer, engineer, mixing
Nick Egan – art direction, design
Michael Halsband – cover photography

Bowie and Iggy are pictured here by Larry Busacca, backstage at The Ritz in New York, after Iggy’s show there during the Blah-Blah-Blah Tour in November 1986.

“Jagat mein sabse sundar kaun, Madhav?”

My first thoughts, after the softest hello greeted me while I waited in anticipation.
Ten seconds in, and I think I’d already eased into the moment. There was always something more to talk about and something more to listen to.

And as we said our goodbyes, I was left with the same thought:

“Jagat mein sabse sundar kaun, Madhav?” 🧿🫶🏻
