Gift tags 2019
Acrylic on canvas
Following up on my last post about these gift tags I wanted to dig a bit deeper into the actual thinking behind them.
Back then, when I first started working on this concept I was really leaning into
"Shapism."
It's essentially the idea that you can strip away all literal imagery and distill our visual world down to its fundamental building blocks.
This specific layout is a continuation of a second design experiment I was running back then in 2018 and 2019.
I was trying to figure out how far you could push geometric abstraction before it loses its edge, and these tags felt like the right place to revisit that puzzle.
For me, it comes down to how the forms balance and compete with each other.
By layering the grey blocks, the cream circle, and that crimson backdrop against the green, the design relies entirely on composition and negative space.
It's just a reminder that simple geometry can do the heavy lifting perfectly.
