My friend @hubermanlab just sounded the alarm on the coolest hack for falling back asleep. If you wake up in the middle of the night, keep your eyes closed, move them slowly side to side, circle them counterclockwise, then clockwise, then cross them toward your nose and take a long, slow exhale. Repeat until you drift off. It sounds strange, but there’s real biology behind it. To fall asleep, your brain has to stop tracking where your body is in space. Your eyes are wired into your balance system, so moving them in slow, unfamiliar patterns scrambles those signals and your brain lets go. The side-to-side motion also quiets the amygdala, your brain’s threat center, and the long exhale slows your heart rate and shifts you into rest. One more thing. If you’re waking up at the same time every night, it’s worth asking why. Blood sugar dips, alcohol close to bedtime, high stress hormones, and light in the bedroom are common culprits. This trick helps you get back to sleep. Fixing the root cause helps you stay there. Try it next time you’re up in the middle of the night, and let us know if it worked!
