A CFA tells me you’re disciplined. But half the pile has one. It gets you read. It doesn’t get you picked.

Financial modelling? Assumed. Nobody’s impressed you can link three statements - that’s the entry ticket. And the uncomfortable truth: the mechanical half of modelling is exactly what AI now does in minutes.

Here’s what’s changed, and fast.

If you want IB, PE, VC, equity research or wealth management at a top firm - being able to make AI do real finance work is no longer a bonus. It’s becoming the baseline.

And it’s now one of the first things that comes up in interviews.

Not “do you use ChatGPT.” I mean:

→ Can you hand AI filings and transcripts and get back a banker-grade research report?
→ Can you build a driver-based model - revenue as units × price, not one guessed growth rate?
→ Can you write guardrails so it flags a missing number instead of inventing one?
→ Can you build skills, bots and agents that run without you?

If you can’t answer these when asked, the interview is effectively over. Because from our side of the table it signals one thing: you’ve been watching this shift happen and you did nothing about it.

And here’s what stings - almost everyone thinks they’re already an AI expert. From where I sit, most aren’t 1% of the way to what the actual job demands.

So let me say the quiet part loudly:

AI won’t replace your job. Someone who uses AI better than you will.

That’s not a prediction. It’s already happening in hiring rooms.
