Core memory- unlocked 😭 . . Truly thinking about this moment could instantly bring me to tears. One of the happiest moments of my life. When I say my mom is my biggest cheerleader, I mean that this woman has a note on her phone documenting every single day I was gone on survivor, timestamped with what she was praying for me. One of the biggest gifts of this whole journey was that it wasn’t just my dream… my people dreamed it with me. So when I got the news… I WAS PLAYING 51 I didn’t care what it took I wanted to tell her in person. . . To pull this off I had to lie to her for a week telling her I hadn’t heard back (BRUTAL). I flew to AZ turned off my location services picked up these balloons and drove to the house as fast as I could. I had surprised my dad earlier that week (he is also one of my biggest cheerleaders) and he helped me coordinate so that my mom thought HE was going to be at the front door when she opened it- but really he was in Baltimore 🤣 . . Safe to say we absolutely confused and delighted my mom, and this woman deserves every ounce of happiness life can give her 😭
For years, I was afraid of what people might think of me. ❤️ I worried about being judged, about people not understanding me, and about what would happen if I showed this side of myself to the world. And looking back, I realize how much time I spent worrying about things that hadn’t even happened yet. Accepting myself didn’t happen overnight. It took time to become comfortable with who I am, to stop questioning whether it was okay to enjoy the things I love, and to realize that I don’t need everyone’s approval to be happy. I’m a guy who loves dressing up, doing makeup, wearing heels and expressing a feminine side of myself. And for a long time, I struggled with accepting that those things could simply be part of who I am. But here’s something I’ve learned along the way: you don’t have to fit into someone else’s expectations to be happy with yourself. 💕 And I think that’s something so many of us struggle with, whether it’s about how we look, what we wear, who we love, or simply being a little different from what others expect. These days, I’m much more comfortable being Julia. I go shopping, go out, meet new people and enjoy moments I once thought I’d never have the confidence to experience. Of course, I still have insecurities. We all do. But I’m no longer letting the fear of being judged decide what I can or cannot enjoy. If I could tell my younger self one thing, it would be this: Don’t spend so much of your life worrying about what other people might think. You deserve to enjoy being yourself, too. ❤️ And if you’re reading this while struggling with accepting a part of yourself, whatever that may be, I hope you’ll give yourself the time and kindness you deserve. I’ve spent a lot of my career sharing stories about running. Training highs and lows and maybe most notably: marathon race recaps. Though I didn’t run a marathon this year, this summer I experienced something much more challenging. It was a summer filled with uncertainty surrounding my pregnancy and the birth of our son. There were moments of joy, fear, and a lot of moments I’m still trying to make sense of. I’ve struggled with how much of this experience to share. Some memories are difficult to revisit, and others feel impossible to put into words. But if I’ve taken anything away from our experience this summer, the professionals we worked with and the countless other families who have tackled similar situations, it’s that, like the marathon, many of us are navigating the same uncertain waters. So, in true marathon recap fashion, I want to share a multi-part chronicle of my pregnancy, Warren’s birth, and the journey that has followed. It’s raw, emotional, graphic and at times may be difficult to read. And while we have embraced the difficulties of our experience entering parenthood, I also recognize that parts of our story may be triggering for others. So, if you’d like to follow along, I’d love to share this chapter of our lives with you.
We’d like to clarify some additional details about Kelly Clarkson’s visit to our Curiosity Shop on Saturday. During the 5 minutes she spent in the store, she inquired about our mechanical bird puppet named Molly. We explained that while Molly is permanently attached to the wall and serves as a de facto mascot for our shop, a nearly identical automaton is owned by the creator of the machines, a brilliant artist named Bliss Kolb who lives in Seattle. He told us he would be willing to part with Molly’s twin for $15,000. We explained all of this to Kelly Clarkson. We also offered to show her a different singing bird automaton, made by a traditional clockmaking shop in Germany, that she could have taken home with her that day. It costs about $2,000. She did not stick around long enough to see it. We’ve reached out to Kelly directly to try and clear the air. We really do wish her the best and hope that someday we can all laugh about this misunderstanding.
