Empathy is often taught as “put yourself in someone else’s shoes.”
But sometimes, while trying so hard to understand everyone else, we forget to check in with ourselves.
Understanding someone doesn’t mean dismissing your own feelings.
Caring about someone doesn’t mean constantly adjusting.
And validating someone else’s emotions doesn’t require you to invalidate your own.
Healthy empathy has space for both people. 🤍
You can say, “I understand you” and still say, “this hurt me.”
Maybe that’s a part of emotional boundaries we don’t talk about enough.
What does empathy mean to you?
