Two questions on the form decide almost everything. Name two pieces of work you'll actually show. Not "recent projects": the client, the product, the name. Then walk us through one decision that changed the outcome, and why you made it. The strongest pitches include one that didn't go to plan.

🎬🎹 Ryuichi Sakamoto – Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence Ryuichi Sakamoto – piano 🎹 • David Bowie turned down the invitation to sing this melody. The story comes from Ryuichi Sakamoto himself, who says he alone had the idea of a sung version of the theme and first invited his co-star. Sakamoto then called on the singer David Sylvian, author of the lyrics, who traveled to Japan to record the song Forbidden Colours. The director Nagisa Oshima entrusted Sakamoto with the score for the film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, the first the composer wrote for the cinema, and it earned Sakamoto a BAFTA for best score. • The melody, according to a Japanese piano encyclopedia, uses a five-note scale from the tradition of Japan. Listen again and pay attention to the beginning: after the first notes, the piano stays for a moment on nothing but the resonance of what has already sounded, and then a low strike arrives. Taken as a whole, the passage starts almost whispered and ends at its strongest level, without dropping back. • The filming of this concert was directed by Neo Sora, Sakamoto's son, in September 2022, at NHK's Studio 509 in Tokyo. Sakamoto said they recorded only a few pieces a day, with great care. Sora says that, in the concert film, his father plays more slowly than usual, partly because of his health, partly because he had become obsessed with hearing the sounds fade away. The video is entirely in black and white. In the wide shot, Sakamoto appears in profile, with no audience, with the sheets of the score loose on the piano and a lamp lit overhead. After the session, Sakamoto said he felt empty and that his condition got worse for a few weeks.
