A shooting in Baltimore County left one man dead and two others injured after a homeowner opened fire on three masked men who approached him outside his residence on Halloween. The incident occurred at approximately 10:40 p.m. on October 31 in the 10000 block of Greenside Drive in Cockeysville, according to Baltimore County Police. Investigators said the homeowner was sitting in his driveway when three masked individuals approached him carrying a handgun. The men allegedly threatened the resident, prompting him to draw his own firearm and open fire. After being shot, the three men reportedly fled the scene. The homeowner subsequently called 911 to alert authorities. Police officers responding to the incident searched the surrounding area and discovered one of the men dead a short distance from the residence. Authorities identified him as 20-year-old Amon Walker. The other two individuals, both adult males, later arrived at local hospitals seeking medical attention for injuries sustained during the incident. During the investigation, officers also recovered a loaded handgun believed to have been carried by the suspects. Police have not released further details about the two surviving men. The investigation remains ongoing.

A month ago Elissa Slotkin stood on a stage and bragged about her education. She had gone to Poland and Hungary, she said, and studied the forces that beat Viktor Orban, and she brought the lessons home. There is a playbook for these authoritarians, she said, and there is a playbook for getting out of it. She said it like the notes were a weapon. She said it weeks before the police surrounded a constitutional court in Warsaw. Then came Friday night. Riot police cordoned off the Constitutional Tribunal, the court that had stood in the prime minister’s way, and a judge the president never swore in suspended the court’s president and vice president. The court itself called it an illegal takeover and a coup d’état. The prime minister took credit for restoring the rule of law. The president flew home from Africa, walked through the crowds, climbed the barriers, and entered his own court. It reads like Slotkin’s playbook, in real time: the broad coalition, the corruption charge, the court neutralized, all of it dressed as saving democracy. The lessons she brought home from Poland arrived in Poland first. Nobody says she ordered the police to the court. Nobody has to. The question is whose side the playbook serves, and the answer was on the stage a month ago: the side that seizes the court and calls it law, the side that suspends the judges and calls it order, the side that treats a constitutional tribunal as an obstacle to be removed rather than a limit to be obeyed. Slotkin brought home lessons from Poland. Donald Tusk just demonstrated the lesson back, and the lesson is that the authoritarian playbook has two covers. One of them is hers. Michigan should read both before Tuesday.
