Workshop - OBSERVATORIES
with Food Hack Lab
Andoni Munduate Dorronsoro, Jon Aldalur Soto and Varsha Lai @foodhacklab

Observatories begins with a simple question: if a tree falls in a forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?

The project brings this question into the forests of Bosco di Santo Pietro and Sughereta di Niscemi, where nine “witnesses” inhabit nine different sites. Made from cork and 3D-printed PETG, they collect data on temperature, humidity and ambient sound through a network of sensors. The data travels in small packets through a LoRa network — almost like whispers moving from one place to another — creating new ways of observing and listening to the forest.

Rather than speaking on behalf of the forest, Observatories proposes a quiet, shared form of listening: a network that observes, collects and makes visible what is happening around it.

Food Hack Lab is a non-profit organisation founded in the Basque Country in 2015. It explores the relationship between technology, food systems and local knowledge through workshops, research and collaborative projects.
