Let me be very clear: this is in no way, shape, or form a personal attack on anyone who enjoys these tropes or narrative devices. It’s just that I PERSONALLY am tired of seeing them repeat in every other fantasy book.

I remember back in the day when people were RAGING about the ending of Divergent, while I was in the group that actually quite enjoyed it. It was unique! It was unexpected, and I like to be caught off guard.

I feel like this is also why some books end up blending together for me after a year or two, and I really wish that wasn’t the case.

Anyway, do you share the feeling? What’s something you’re tired of seeing in fantasy books?

I’m currently rewriting my book and this gave me a very big idea for one of the scenes. Thank you thank you thank you! 🙇🏽‍♀️

Tried writing a story where the FMC accidentally got magic and that brought all kinds of dangerous shenanigans. The thing was, she couldn't get good enough at magic for the Big Moment and I realised she might need to be a little less anxious bc uuuuh girl you need to learn how to fight like... yesterday 😂💀 She wasn't stupid, she just wasn't a quick learner and she had to fight a dude that was a master 😂😂😂

Iiii don't want to see the lack of damn culture. People don't make good fantasy because it's so main stream it becomes fucking basic, it lacks damn whimsy, culture and anything interesting

The last one. Exactly. It always has no sense and. They usually come back to life for the happy ending. Nope. They are gone. Leave it this way.

I think this says more about the kind of books you are reading than anything else. I barely come across this. All sloppy YA and romantasy tropes. Chosen one stopped being a thing in popular fantasy in the 90s.

Absolutely agreed with everything! I think that’s why I loved Shield of Sparrows so much! The whole book was just a breathe of fresh air! The protagonist is also one of my favourites because she’s so normal and actually kind.

i hate when female main characters are clumsy and have got no idea about anything and then suddenly they are stronger than anybody else and have learned to fight in like a month or so. also when the characters fall in love after like two days and the mmc basically turns into a dog that’s obsessed with the fmc

Agree on all of these! Fantasy to me has been sooo saturated with Fae and chosen one stories. What happened to the unique lore and subtext in stories?

I don’t mind more fae, as long as they look like Dobby

I'm sorry, I unfortunately can't relate to the first (love them too much 😑) but 100% agree with the rest!
