2 days agoIt's the marriage/relationship inequality no one talks about and this test is at the centre of it.
3 days agoPartner income testing removes financial autonomy and for people experiencing domestic or family violence the reliance on their partner’s money invites a very dangerous form of coercive control via financial abuse. The financial burden for people with chronic health conditions, disabilities and debilitating injuries is a human rights abuse. If you cannot afford to pay for your essential mediations and treatment and rent, food or essential services and you must choose between your human right to secure housing, safe food, medication, treatment etc. this is government ordained violation of human rights as defined in Australia.
3 days agoPartner income testing and Centrelink started during Australia's Great Depression. A time when there were still outdated concepts of male breadwinners providing for their family. It was essentially a posterity measure as the government was basically drowning in interest repayments on loans from Britain and the USA. A time when the economy was basically, wool, wheat, and sugar. Basically an agricultural nation whose economy was struck hard by reduced demand for those products. So it is a remnant of a completely different time.
