Is an inconsistent style a bad thing? I feel like there's no single clear answer to this one.

After thinking about it for a while, I decided that two things are true at the same time: Your style doesn't *have* to be consistent. But being able to create a consistent style is super important!

That doesn't mean you have to draw the same thing for the rest of your life - it just means that if you're working on a project like a comic or animation, you want the art to look like it belongs to the same universe. Consistency is an important part of that!

I made a video about this topic where I talk about social media, marketing, professional skills, and also mushrooms and pumpkin spice lattes because it's autumn, baby🎃🍂 You know where to find it!

Happy to hear that because as you can see on my feed, I have a style, just NOT A CONSISTENT ONE… Every new illustration I reinvent myself 🥴

I’m nearly 30 years into my career & there are pros & cons. Having different styles makes me a jack of all trades, advertising agencies & graphic designers love this, they don’t need to hunt a specific artist for a project. HOWEVER, illustration agencies won’t touch me, publishing companies, kids books etc, require the narrow style you describe. My style, what I post here, is very much my own projects, clients have never showed an interest in it. I’m cool with keeping it for myself, like my own happy place.

I try to slowly evolve my style with the skills I learned. This way my art stays recognizable to viewers but looking back there are a lot of improvements

But does having a consistent style make it easier to get work? Whether it's commissions or professional work, then clients know what to expect, right?
