No seriously, PLEASE give me your recommendations!

Preferably available on audiobook, anything around the 8 hour or less mark I reckon, that was just “unputdownable”, where the science was so engaging and well woven it doesn’t feel like work!

Even for my own enjoyment, sometimes I prefer a bit of non-fiction that isn’t preaching how I can become a better me 🥴 (Of course I always end up reading into the inherent metaphors of nature books too 😅)

A little disclaimer: both these books are intended for adults, and Soil in particular probably deserves a little language warning. I haven’t re-listened to it before making this reel, but if memory serves there are a handful of more “colourful” words. I made the decision for my family that they would be able to hear those without drama, you may make different decisions for your family! 😅

Yes! I agree wholeheartedly. Our current non-fiction read aloud is “Return of the Osprey” which I discovered after randomly seeing a sign that said there was an environmental centre near us called Osprey house. Where we have been able to visit regularly to watch the lifecycle of an osprey family from mating to hatched chicks. While also reading this incredible book written as the author describes his own experience of studying osprey by spending many hours watching them in the wild. Many times we have viewed certain behaviour while visiting the environmental centre, then to read about that exact behaviour in the next chapter which explained why they do it. For example when the first chick hatched the male Osprey brought some green branches to the nest. Which is only done as a way of celebration and for beauty. So they were decorating to celebrate their babies birth! I paired this with a fiction novel called “Bird boy” where a boy finds and helps an Osprey chick. All of which has lead to a very deep dive on Ospreys, which are incredible birds we never even knew existed prior to spotting that sign for Osprey house.

Here’s a recommendation for children and adults alike who love nature and animals and gives will have everyone looking at cows as family groups . The secret life of cows by Ros Young . It was so life changing and nature affirming that my husband left the dairy industry !
