What do you think of when I say: Aussie literature??

I have a terrible feeling that for a lot of the world it’s:
🦗🦗🦗

And when it comes to kids’ authors and classics, it’s even quieter. 😳

If you read all the big British and American classics, but not Aussie ones, you’re really missing out!

I’m hoping a little dose of FOMO might inspire you to dip your toes into Aussie kids’ classics.

My unpublished debut novel is the tale of Cinderella, with a twist. The kingdom is searching for the Prince’s mystery beau, but not everyone is thrilled for the chance to try on the glass slipper. To one girl this process seems ridiculous, and she is about to say so. What happens next will begin to unravel the truth behind her idyllic childhood, and alter not just her life, but the whole kingdom. by @meg.rogerson_author

With apologies to those who’ve already seen it, the “trailer” for my unpublished novel.

I had the idea for this video several months ago, and along with putting together all the materials, and having the time to make it, there was another concern that weighed heavily upon me...

I find it completely terrifying to talk about the premise of my story. I’m always so worried that either it already exists out there, or worse still, that someone might take it from me.

But once you go down the path of trying to “sell” your work, then “comp titles” are something you will encounter. You have to prove your work is valuable by suggesting it is similar it to something that already has worth in the market.

In a past video I compared my work to the movie “Hook”. Essentially; a well known tale from another angle. But “Hook”, now a cult classic, was famously a box office flop.

And that’s the other trouble with “twisted fairytales”. I think maybe there’s a general distrust that there’s enough in the source material to be worth telling it again.

So I’m trying hard to trust that my own unique “compost” of experiences and reading history, have created the ideal fertiliser for a unique and valuable tale of my own 😅🤞🏻🤞🏻

There’s only so much a teacher can do if the groundwork isn’t being laid in the home.

And that’s not laziness on the part of teachers, that’s just science.

Students are turning up less prepared than ever to learn, and I’m not just talking about their attention. Their memory, their general knowledge, teachers are watching the active decline of students’ ability to process and store what we tell them.

If you’re starting at the beginning with a small child, or you’re trying to start a new habit with an older child, it will never be too late to pivot in a positive direction with your child’s reading.

No seriously, PLEASE give me your recommendations!

Preferably available on audiobook, anything around the 8 hour or less mark I reckon, that was just “unputdownable”, where the science was so engaging and well woven it doesn’t feel like work!

Even for my own enjoyment, sometimes I prefer a bit of non-fiction that isn’t preaching how I can become a better me 🥴 (Of course I always end up reading into the inherent metaphors of nature books too 😅)

A little disclaimer: both these books are intended for adults, and Soil in particular probably deserves a little language warning. I haven’t re-listened to it before making this reel, but if memory serves there are a handful of more “colourful” words. I made the decision for my family that they would be able to hear those without drama, you may make different decisions for your family! 😅

I think perhaps we’re seeing a theme here; the books I have chosen are probably less about teaching us about nature, and more about improving our disposition toward all aspects of life, so that we may also appreciate nature, in all her inconsistency! 😅

This one will delight you, even as it absolutely refuses to satisfy your desire for the family to see even ONE crab!

One of Bruce Whatley’s earlier solo works, you can truly appreciate the genius of his later works interpreting the stories of others. He’s an elusive character to track, as he works in so many different styles, so it’s cool to watch him play with two at once. 🤓🎨

Magic Beach was the second Alison Lester title that I fell in love with, and it narrowly missed out on winning an Environment Award for Children’s Literature… as it was published three years before the award’s inception! 😅

I have always loved the way it made clear that we carry the dragons and pirates with us wherever we go, and that the best “toy” is a well-fed imagination.

But when I think about the way it cultivates an appreciation for the ecosystem of the beach, it is that familiarity which seems to increase the children’s love. Yes, the majesty of a great wonder of the world is inescapable, but who can love the Great Barrier Reef at first sight, as much as they love the climbing tree that cradles them every afternoon?

The thing I can tell you for sure, is that I absolutely have not done this one justice in this 2.5 minute clip 😅 Gosh I loved it, and I was so tickled when I saw that it had won the Environment Award for Children’s Literature.

My only complaint is that I read it far too fast! I wish there had been more pages to slow me down, I had literary indigestion by the end!

Explicit teaching has become a parenting taboo.

It feels too demanding, and so very un-gentle.

But if you’re a millennial like me, you remember being taught how to do things. You remember the excitement of dipping your toes into the grown up world, as they allowed you to take on each new responsibility.

No way were my parents risking missing an important call on the ONE phone line we had. No way were they risking my grandparents wasting their money on a long distance call where the message might not get passed on!

Aside from anything else, and no matter how awkward it feels to tell a child “you’re not people-ing correctly” we owe them cultural literacy. We owe them the possibility of becoming not just useful, but likeable citizens of the world. by @meg.rogerson_author

Nature Book Week runs from the 10-18th of October, and is such a brilliant way to draw awareness to this wonderful category of books.

I hope you’ll celebrate with me, and bombard me with all the books that made you and your families appreciate the natural world even more!

(Currently feeling like I do on the morning of the Melbourne Cup, wondering if my favourite will win the race! Can’t wait for the announcement!! 🤞🏻)

Disclaimer: the Wilderness Society kindly invited me to make a single post promoting Nature Book Week, and gave me total creative control over what I made, so I hope the posts I have planned for next week will exceed their expectations!

They also very kindly sent me three of the nominated books as a gift/to enable me to have access to some of the books for my post, and said that I was not obligated to talk about any of those, and could choose whichever nature-themed books best suited my understanding of the brief.

I have not been paid for my involvement. by @meg.rogerson_author

Rejection #4 officially chalked up.

I realised after several weeks of waiting that as I rushed off the last submission, I had failed to attach the synopsis. And then, almost simultaneously, I learned that the publisher I had selected was in the middle of a cyber attack crisis. So I don’t know whether to feel disappointed or relieved. (And of course given that my submission was incomplete there’s no way of knowing whether the thing even got looked at in the first place 😵‍💫)

Anyway, onward and upward! Submission #5 went in today, starting the clock on six months wait (ending 26th March, 2027) Interestingly, this one says I will actually hear from them when my submission has been assessed!?

Also, to double-down on forgetting to submit the synopsis last time, I gave TWO synopsises (synopses??) this time; one for this story, and one for the series. 🤞🏻🙏🏻 by @meg.rogerson_author

We’ve all been there:

Everyone is steadily losing patience waiting for something, the car wash, the drive thru, the hotel check-in, lunch...

It makes you feel so smug to have a circuit-breaker up your sleeve. An emergency protocol to calm and distract everyone from the current deadlock of frustration.

These stories have saved my butt more times than I’d like to count, and they remain like old friends today.
Every so often a child will say “Can we have THE podcast? Can we have the story about the tin??”
And I can’t help but smile, as we tread the familiar paths again.

What’s your preferred circuit-breaker?
