After my rant about phonics, I tried to go Christmas shopping to soothe myself and ended up getting enraged all over again by the state of the children’s publishing industry. PLEASE STOP DOING IT. What are your thoughts about this everyone surely this is just me 🙈 #parenting #childhood #books by @jenny_kovar

Sometimes it’s good to remind ourselves of all the beautiful children’s books that are available out there that won’t make you feel vaguely nauseous, either from trying too hard to be relatable and so depicting a deeply cynical and depressing characterisation of modern children, or from being too overtly moralistic and preachy in tone.

What creators would you add to this list?

Please share your recommendations to help others find the books you and your children love.

If you like my videos about children’s books, I’d be delighted if you would pop over and have a look at my new substack newsletter where I write about the magic of forgotten children’s books and why they are still relevant for today’s readers. Link in bio.

Have a lovely day 🌞

The Littlest Witch Jeanne Massy and Adrienne Adams 1959
She is the smallest with of all and that’s the trouble! Adrienne Adam’s was a two time Caldecott Honor Illustrator. Here Halloween is soft and autumnal rather than scary. Copies from the 50s and 60s still turn up.

Who was the littlest witch in your family?

Read them books!!!

No balaclava wearing twerps were harmed in the making of this video, but the intellectual and moral life of choir children might be harmed if you don’t read them books!!

The Sally Lockhart books by Philip Pullman. @philippullmanofficial

Four Victorian mysteries that are still so often my answer for teenage readers (or precocious older children).

Here we visit London, 1872, where there is fog on the river, opium dens, counting houses and cold lodgings.

Sixteen-year-old Sally Lockhart is newly orphaned and handed a message that frightens a man to death. While she can read a balance sheet and fire a pistol, she cannot sew and often behaves in ways scandalous to polite society.

She is not waiting to be rescued.

The atmosphere is gaslit and tense. Philip Pullman here takes young readers into real danger and real moral questions.
What he does not do is lean on the explicit content that fills so much of the YA shelf now. The stakes come from courage, politics, injustices and loyalties.
Which all makes these excellent choices for a reader of 12 or 13 who is ready for beyond children’s fiction.

Start with The Ruby in the Smoke. Then The Shadow in the North, The Tiger in the Well and The Tin Princess.

Tell me in the comments. Which book would you hand a teenager who has outgrown children’s books but is not ready for everything YA offers? I will gather the answers into a post.

Save this for the next time someone asks you for a teen book recommendation..
