More @littlegoldenbooks Plus classic Dick and Jane. I do love a good thriftstore haul! Thanks @wecareministriesmartin
And as we are on the subject of children's literature, I want to give a shout out to @jenny_kovar and the great work she is doing. Yes, if we could all just move to @richardscarrylove Busy Town, it would very nice.

How many people can name more than 3 women who were authors or illustrators working on pieces for children before the 1950s??
I would expect most people to be able to name Beatrix Potter E Nesbit and Frances Hodgson Burnett. Some may have got Richmal Crompton and Noel Streatfeild. But there were many, many, many more that the cannon has forgotten.
It is for this reason that I am working to start my own publishing company- to put these women back where they belong. I am working on my first reprint of a forgotten illustrated work for younger readers (now forgotten) from the golden age of children’s literature. Follow along to watch the journey

Picture books from childhood. Apparently they’re considered “vintage” now! Favourite early childhood books. What were your favourites? Which ones are you passing down to the next generation? I have lots of Ladybird books and other childhood books that my Mum could dust off for another video, if you’d like to see more! Let me know.

I’m working my way through @jenny_kovar ‘s 100 Vintage Picture Books to Look Out For. You can find the list in the link tree on her page. I fortuitously found book #103 (there are, in fact, 103 books and not 100) while thrifting today. The illustrations are gorgeous and I can’t wait to stumble upon all of the rest. If you’re a lover of tasteful, quality, vintage children’s literature, her list is an excellent guide. She also includes musical accompaniment suggestions for each book on the list.

This week we share a wonderful piece of writing on art in children’s literature. Jenny Kovar’s substack is a discovery we will treasure, with big thanks to @anushkaravishankar for pointing us towards it.

It is rare to find children’s literature from India being examined with depth and care, particularly in the West. This article by Kovar on the art of Pulak Biswas is a testament to the recognition that Indian children’s literature deserves beyond our borders. Kovar does a magnificent close reading of Biswas’ illustrations for children’s books and reminds us of how powerful visual storytelling can be when rooted in local aesthetics, colour, context and cultural memory. Kovar brings the same respect to the reading of Biswas’s images as he brought to the world of children. So much of what she writes resonates deeply with this moment when there is so much attention on children and yet, the multiplicity of childhood and children’s lived experiences continue to be elided.
