“Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word.”
— Luke 1:38, Douay-Rheims
Do those words make you uncomfortable?
In a feminist-informed age, they can sword in the heart. They can hurt a little. And maybe they should.
The Virgin Mary was completely humbled before a Being infinitely greater and more powerful than herself. She did not cling to her own plans, demand to understand everything, or place herself at the center. She surrendered herself to the will of God.
But before you think, “So Mary was just a subjected doormat,” remember who this woman is.
The Virgin Mary is Queen of Heaven.
The terror of demons.
The help of humanity in our greatest hour of need.
The woman whom Satan fears.
Her humility did not diminish her. It revealed her greatness.
Perhaps we cannot fully understand this kind of humility right now.
That's okay.
Maybe this Advent, we can simply ask Mary to help us understand her heart—and to teach us how to receive the Word as she did.
Join us for Pondering and Preserving the Word: The Maternal Memory of Mary, a virtual mini morning retreat with Fr. Jeremiah Shryock, CFR and Claire Dwyer, as we enter Advent by learning from Mary how to receive, ponder, and preserve the Word.
