Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders have moved the Supreme Court against the Election Commission of India (ECI) over alleged irregularities in the electoral process and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. The petition names Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, alongside the poll panel. The specific grounds and reliefs sought in the plea have not yet been made public. The move follows days of protests by opposition parties against alleged “vote chori” and the removal of names from electoral rolls. The opposition has accused the Election Commission of mishandling the voter-list revision, while the ECI has maintained that its decisions follow established legal procedures and denied favouring any political party. The INDIA bloc’s decision to approach the Supreme Court came after Chief Justice of India Surya Kant declined a request by Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for a meeting. The Chief Justice said the issues raised were already before the court and advised the leaders to pursue the matter through the judicial process. Before the filing, Rahul Gandhi had demanded Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, alleging that larger forces were behind the decisions being challenged. He said the opposition’s campaign was aimed at protecting the Constitution and reforming the electoral system. The petition marks a shift from street demonstrations to a formal legal challenge. The Supreme Court’s next steps, including whether and when the plea will be listed for hearing, remain to be seen. The Election Commission’s response to the specific allegations in the petition is also awaited.
