Our Natural Resource Specialist, James Johnson, visited Inwood Park to show us how to tell the difference between tree of heaven and staghorn sumac! 🌳

Tree of heaven is an invasive species that attracts the invasive spotted lanternfly, while staghorn sumac is native to our area and an important part of our forest ecosystem.

Watch to learn how to identify these two look-alike plants, and stay tuned for our next video, where we’ll show you how to properly remove tree of heaven!

Another good Id tip is Alianthus altissima (tree of heaven) has a distinct smelly odor. Rhus typhina (Staghorn sumac) doesn’t have much of a smell. I remember not knowing the difference between when I started ID’ing plants.

Should include walnut as well. That’s another common misidentification
