Vernietiging.” — AFP | Reuters

Christopher Hitchens challenges one of the most troubling ideas in Christianity: that a loving God could create a system of eternal punishment for those who fail to love or believe in him. Think about the moral question behind this argument. If a human being threatened someone with endless torture unless they loved him in return, would we call that love? The problem becomes even more difficult if God is described as all-knowing. If God knows what evidence would convince every person, why would sincere nonbelief deserve eternal punishment? Believers disagree about the nature of hell, whether it is eternal, and who experiences it. But the underlying question remains: can punishment without end ever be proportionate to a finite human life? A belief being ancient or sacred doesn't place it beyond moral examination. If we value compassion and justice, shouldn't we apply those standards to the gods we are asked to worship, too? Would you consider a God worthy of worship if disbelief could result in eternal punishment? #ChristopherHitchens #JustThink #Atheism #Christianity #Religion God Philosophy ProblemOfHell ProblemOfEvil ReligiousCriticism CriticalThinking Skepticism Reason FreeThought MoralPhilosophy PhilosophyOfReligion QuestionEverything ThinkForYourself Evidence
