‘Navabhasha’ - Navratri series 2026 - Day 9- Manipravalam
Even though not an individual language in itself, Manipravalam combines Sanskrit with South Indian languages like Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.
About Manipravalam:
Manipravalam (மணிப்பிரவாளம் / മണിപ്രവാളം) is a traditional literary style that beautifully blends Sanskrit with a regional language, particularly Tamil or Malayalam.
The word comes from two Sanskrit terms:
Mani (மணி) – Ruby
Pravalam (பவளம்) – Coral
Just as ruby and coral are combined to create a beautiful ornament, Manipravalam combines Sanskrit and regional-language expressions to create an elegant literary form.
Manipravalam has a special place in South Indian devotional literature and performing arts. It is found in devotional compositions, poetry and religious commentaries. In Carnatic music, compositions blend Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam or other South Indian languages. This composition of Dikshitar combines Sanskrit, Tamil and Telugu🙏🏻
