In 1950, Luna Park was known as the “Place of 50,000 Lights”.
Post war, after some time in complete blackout, an independent electricity generating plant was installed inside the grounds specifically, to reliably power the thousands of golden twinkling lights along with a brand new attraction - The Rotor.
The incandescent globes were made in Japan and were housed in porcelain sockets.
Had to post this as I’ve been staring at Ai slop for hours this morning. And I haven’t written the words ‘incandescent’ and ‘porcelain’ for a while.
I was also inspired by the booklet ‘Melbourne By Night’ 1936 which i saw at
@heidemoma this past weekend.
