There are moments when singing stops being a performance and becomes a communal act of healing.  On December 3, 1995, the world of the arts gathered at the Kennedy Center to honor Sidney Poitier—the groundbreaking artist who dismantled Hollywood racial barriers with unmatched dignity. To close his tribute, operatic soprano Jessye Norman stepped into the spotlight.  Norman was an artist of rare stature. Trained in the classical lieder and Wagnerian traditions, she never severed her connection to the spirituals she sang as a young girl in Augusta, Georgia.  Joined by a choir of over a hundred singers dressed in ordinary street clothes, Norman delivered John Newton’s “Amazing Grace” with awe-inspiring vocal architecture. Her sound was neither forced nor thin; it moved like rolling thunder through the Opera House, filling every acoustic corner without needing electronic enhancement.  In the Presidential Box, Bill Clinton and Sidney Poitier wiped away tears.
