On November 02, a man identified as Akhil Kumar Chandak from Rajasthan raised a serious allegations of forced religious conversation involving his circumcision (Khatna) in Assam’s Guwahati.

Chandak alleged that he was forcibly circumcised after being allegedly intoxicated near the Bhangagarh TV Tower Area. This was carried against his will.

Following the incident, Chandak approached the Bhangagarh Police Station and lodged a formal complaint, seeking appropriate action.

A bench comprising Chief Justice SA Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan issued notices to several authorities, including the Union Home Ministry, UIDAI, Regional Passport Office and social media platforms X and Instagram. The matter has been listed after six weeks. The petition, filed by Ganesh Kumar of Kanchipuram, seeks a detailed inquiry into Das’s identity and family background. It also requests cancellation of his passport and Aadhaar if allegations are established, and blocking of his social media accounts over alleged derogatory remarks against the judiciary and Supreme Court judges. At the lower-middle-income threshold of $4.20 per day (2021 PPP), the rate fell from 57.7% to 16.1%, lifting an estimated 496 million people out of poverty. The gains were driven by strong consumption growth, rising employment - particularly among women - and expanded social transfers, including food subsidies. Multidimensional poverty also declined sharply over the longer term. Despite the progress, challenges remain. Rural poverty stood at 19.3% in 2023 compared with 8.6% in urban areas, and a contiguous belt of states from Uttar Pradesh to West Bengal still accounts for about 57% of the country’s poor. Roughly 80% of Indians remained below the upper-middle-income line of $8.30 a day. The World Bank projects further gradual declines at the $4.20 threshold, from 14.2% in 2026 to 12.1% by 2028, but stresses the need for higher-productivity jobs and better earnings to sustain and deepen the gains.
