In Finland picturebooks are mostly illustrated with the help of artistic grants, not as commissions from publishers.
The artistic freedom this entails is definitely a perk!

Meanwhile there really is a limit to just how free an artistic endeavor can be in terms of the economy of the project.

This is why I am still working my normal job and keeping art as a hobby. I also include my kids in my hobbies to spend more time together with them. I dream of being a full-time artist and illustrator and admire those of you who are but I'm not brave enough yet to make that leap.

🤔Interesting to know this. So, most books are funded by grants? What do the publishers do? Wait for the next round of funding? 🤷🏾‍♂️

Once again, I only really stumbled upon this option through your post! A bit shocked at the lack of information at my Uni, and generally I haven’t found many resources for that in Germany at least. I‘ll dig deeper 🦭

Another interesting thing about grants is that the amount that is granted per month for full time artistic work is low compared to salaried jobs (especially considering the amount of expertise an illustrator usually has).. meaning that if the illustrator needs a higher income (for example to provide for children or pay for the high cost of living we have right now) living on a working grant is sometimes impossible 😅 (if you don’t have more family members who also provide financially). But it’s still ofc very good that grants exist at all, and I guess the low level of income is kinda the price we pay for the freedom 😐 (I’m currently applying for research grants and that’s no gold mine either 😭)

Especially in a world where illustrators aren’t even seen as actual authors of their picturebooks whenever there is a writer involved in the collaboration. Oh, don’t get me started 😅
