Ofc this chart would be different for everyone but I think the point stands. For many, being chronically ill is a full time job (that costs you loads of money).

ID: “We all have the same number of hours in a day!” Underneath there are two rectangles (look a bit like batteries I thought!) The one on the left is labelled Life and the rectangle has two sections labelled Sleep which fills about a third and Work/Play. The other one is labelled Life w/ Chronic Illness and it is filled with sleep like the other one but then also has Pain, Rest, Treatment, Med. Admin which take up nearly all of the rest of the rectangle with a little slither left for Work/Play. Underneath that it says “No, we don’t.”

Disabled people are nearly a quarter of the UK population. We are not an outlier or abberation. If you don't see us, it's because we aren't welcome.

ID: blue background with disability wheelchair symbol. On it there is the following steps arranged in a circle to illustrate a cycle: inaccessibility-disabled people unable to participate - disabled people not seen in public - disabled people seen as outlier/rarity- 'so we don't need to consider them'- inaccessibility'

ID: It says “Dear ableist podcast boys,” and underneath it says in alternating pink and green diagonally down the page “The only ‘grim’ and ‘mangled’ thing here is your f*cking attitude.” On either side there is a cartoon woman. On the left she is wearing a pink gown pushing a wheelchair looking tres sassy and on the top right she is covered in flowers using a stand up function on an electric wheelchair.

And yes, when a pushchair is used for a disabled child, it becomes a wheelchair and has the same status (there are tags to add to pushchairs for this reason). That’s not the issue.

ID: A graphic asking “What does the wheelchair space do for you?” On the left, a silhouette of a person with a pram lists riding without folding the pram and being able to buy a non-folding pram and expect to use it on public transport. On the right, a silhouette of a wheelchair user lists the single option: “Ride the bus.” Bottom text reads: “There is a reason it wasn’t parents chained to busses to fight for this space. Don’t confuse your convenience with our access.”

Obviously this isn’t exhaustive but sadly it seems to need saying again right now.

ID: The graphic is split into,m two vertically. One side is pastel purple and is titled “Things That Get Disabled People Into Work” and underneath it lists “Funding for aids, adaptions and reasonable adjustments”, “Disability education and incentives for employers”, “Accessible education”, “Prompt, free healthcare, including effective pain relief”, “Making remote/flexible working a legal right”. The other side is pastel blue and says “Things That Don’t”. Underneath it says “Poverty”.

*Of course the factors differ in type and weighting per person and situation! This was just to illustrate the overarching point ❤️

ID: “Making Plans As A Disabled Person”
There are two pie charts in various shades of blue and pink . The first is titled “What You Think I Need to Consider” and it is broken 60/40. The 60 chunk is labelled “Am I available?” And the 40 chunk “Do I want to go?”

The next one is titled “What I Actually Have To Consider” It’s broken into 8 equal sections and each is labelled -
Am I available?
Do I want to go?
Will I be well enough?
Will it be accessible?
Do I need to conserve spoons?
Will they be ok if I drop out?
Will equipment be functioning?
Will I have PA then?

The next slide says “Please remember this if you ever think your Disabled pal is being ‘difficult’ or ‘unsupportive‘ about an event.”

ID: These things are all access needs: chairs, trolleys, toilets, tea breaks, food available at mealtimes, office chairs, lighting, heating, schedule. Next to each item is a simple line drawing in pink, green or purple that corresponds with the colour of the text.

We all have access needs. It is a privilege not to realise you do because they are met by default.

ID: Dear Disabled people who cannot work,

When they tell you that you’re useless, or a liar, or lazy, please remember that they don’t see you. They choose to see nothing but money. They don’t see your impact on this world - but we do. We see the tenacity, the kindness, and creativity. We see the incredible strength it takes for you to keep going. And we love you for it. You are not alone.

For all those who are chronically ill or Disabled and feel like it DID stop them 💜

It certainly stopped me.

ID “But their disability didn’t stop them!”

Yes it did.

It stopped them,
and changed them
and made them
into their magnificent Disabled selves.

And thank goodness it did because this world needs people who understand what it means to accept, to adapt and to live differently.

ID: First page:

“You can walk so why are using a wheelchair?”

You can yell so why are you using a car horn?

You can pick up dust so why are you using a vacuum cleaner?

You can walk barefoot so why are you wearing shoes?

You can swim so why are you on that boat hmm?

Second page:

This question exists because people think wheelchairs are so awful, they don’t understand why you’d use one if you had literally any other option - walking slowly with pain, recovery, falls, faints etc is still preferable to using a chair on wheels.

They’re wrong. Wheelchairs can be a tool that improves quality of life.

We roll for freedom, independence, pain relief, safety and joy.

ID: There is a speech bubble and inside it says “Why can’t you just go with the flow?” Underneath there is a Disabled woman sitting in a wheelchair with her head propped up on one hand looking at a wavy outline that’s labelled “The Flow”. Inside “The Flow”, there are other labels: “ableist, inaccessible, dangerous, triggering, exclusive, harmful.”

On the next page it says “We have to meticulously plan everything, we have to fight for access, we have to work against the social grain, not because we’re being ‘difficult’, but because this world leaves us no choice. We swim upstream or we drown.”

DIStractingly awesome? Yep.
DIScerning? Fosho.
DISruptive in an inaccessible supermarket? Ofc.
DISco-going? Obvs.

Latin reference: https://www.etymonline.com/word/dis-

ID: The word ‘Disabled’ with the ‘dis’ part highlighted and an arrow pointing to it. Underneath it says ‘Do you avoid the word ‘Disabled’ because of this pesky prefix? Because ‘dis’ means ‘less than’ or ‘not’?’ ‘Good news! It’s Latin and also means ‘set apart’ or ‘in a different direction’ from. Which is beautiful right?’ ‘ Because
we are different.
We are distinct.
We are Disabled. ‘
There is a cartoon of a man who is an amputee and using two walking sticks on the bottom left. There is a cartoon of a woman using an electric wheelchair on the bottom right.
