2026 Roof repair all done! A new pitch pan for a chimney and a whole bunch of patches, and I added a couple yards of dirt to fix any low spots

People ask what I do with all of my free time and then I tell them I live in an underground house and I spend every second away from work, fixing stuff. In this case we had a drainage issue that took several years to track down. And when we did, it required digging, HVAC repair, insulation, pond liner, pvc pipe repair, Tupperware modifications, additional soil, landscape fabric, river rocks, pea gravel and a positive mental attitude. There’s no way to test it until the fall rains arrive, but it ought to do the trick.

Here you can see the HVAC return, yes, for some reason it’s outside the house. The return is actually enclosed in this sheet metal, well insulated, but the outside part had opened up and was exposed to the elements under the eaves.

Beginning of the dry creek bed

This is the basin I came up with to capture the water that comes off of the roof. It’s a Rubbermaid box, pond liner, pipe sealed on the liner with hardware, silicone and whatever else was handy. This is connected to a drain pipe we found in the digging phase. The pond liner and dry creek is for overflow or in event of failure.

Needed some extra dirt to bring the whole thing level. Fortunately we have a couple of piles of the stuff from a prior project.

Just a few July Projects…including roof repair that may actually work. Cheap me finally hired someone who actually knows how to repair this stuff. I still get to shovel all the dirt back in the holes, but at least the TPO membrane should be fixed. We’ve battled a small, very minor yet annoying leak at the chimney that has now been double plus repaired. If that leaks, I may pull out that fireplace and seal up the chimney.

This is the year we’ve exposed lots of the roof, and I’m actually breaking down and hiring someone who knows what they are doing instead of doing it myself.

And this year we rented an excavator, hopefully it doesn’t end up in the kitchen.

Why rest?

Burn day

Made it past April 15 so took today off to clear some stuff out.

It’s odd, but were literally fighting fire with fire. We’re trying to clear out decades of unmanaged overgrowth, then we have to dispose it and believe it or not; this is the way.

Those fires are hot!

Excavator was here for the annoying project, so borrowed it to get rid of three of the six big piles

Sad we have to do the others by hand

Lots of rain, followed by heavy wind means I don’t need to cut anymore firewood trees for NEXT winter.

We lost several large trees. Cut and split and seasoned they will find a second life in the fireplace keeping us warm.
