The adventure of a lifetime ✨

We had a goal

To get outside more, so we bought a VW camper
But it wasn’t quite ready yet for roadtrips, it kept breaking down
So we learned how to fix it
and started driving it further and further from home.
Soon after, we fell deeply in love with camping
but at the end of each trip, something felt off.
We hated the feeling of going back home and “back to reality”
So we asked ourselves
What if we never had to go back to reality?
What if the bus was our home!?

We canceled the lease to our apartment
Put our belongings in a storage unit
And left!
With a new mission in mind
To visit every National Park in the USA!

The first few months of adjusting to life on the road weren’t easy
It was cold and a bit overwhelming learning how to live in such a tiny space
But we started getting the hang of it!
Our first year on the road, we visited 22 National Parks!
And learned to overcome the challenges, together
We met so many incredible people along the way
Friends that will last a lifetime
Amongst all the chaos, we planned a wedding!
Got married
And set back out on the road to finish our goal
Of visiting every National Park in the United States!
We’re currently at park 37 out of the 63 total ☺️

We don’t know where this journey will take us next
But we do know one thing for certain
It’s has been the adventure of a lifetime!

The past year has been a whirlwind of adventure 🗺️🧭

We are Hunter and Hannah, and we have traveled ~30k miles around the USA in our VW bus, Luna. In January 2022 we ended the lease for our apartment in San Diego to travel full time in our tiny home on wheels in search of a more fulfilling way to spend our time. To prioritize experiences over comforts, and to rediscover the beauty that lies in the landscapes across America we had never given ourselves the chance to see. This year we have grown and changed together as we continuously learn, and wherever this lifestyle takes us in the future- we know these priceless moments have been the adventure of a lifetime.

Thank you to those who have joined us here on this journey this past year, and to those we have met in person out on the road. The community of people we have gained has been one of the most fulfilling and unexpected parts of our time over the months, and these new connections are ones we will cherish forever. taken in United States by @packthebus

Out to see the world and the incredible wildlife that inhabit it 🦬✨

While exploring Wyoming, we were able to see more wildlife than anywhere we had ever been before. We felt so lucky to get to see these beautiful animals out in nature, especially as winter began to turn to spring. Watching day-old buffalo calves trotting along following their mothers gave us a feeling of joy we won’t soon forget.

@buffalojeans tasked us with finding buffalo, and boy did we find them! This is the only type of traffic we don’t mind waiting for ☺️ #wherebuffaloroams #buffalopartner #ad

If you had 14 days to see every national park in California, how would you do it? 🌲🏜️🌊

From ancient redwoods and volcanic peaks to giant sequoias, granite cliffs, scorching desert, Joshua trees and remote islands, California packs an absurd amount of landscape into one state.

So if you’ve got two weeks, here’s the route I’d take to 🗺️

📍 Day 1: San Francisco → Redwood National Park
🌲 Day 2: Explore Redwood
🌋 Day 3: Redwood → Lassen Volcanic
🏔️ Day 4: Lassen → Yosemite
🏞️ Day 5: Yosemite
🚌 Day 6: Yosemite → Sequoia & Kings Canyon
🌲 Day 7: Sequoia & Kings Canyon
🏜️ Day 8: Sequoia & Kings Canyon → Death Valley
🔥 Day 9: Death Valley
🚐 Day 10: Death Valley → Joshua Tree
🌵 Day 11: Joshua Tree
🌊 Day 12: Joshua Tree → Channel Islands
🏝️ Day 13: Channel Islands
🪨 Day 14: Channel Islands → Pinnacles

Fourteen days. Nearly 2,000 miles. Nine completely different versions of California.

And by the time you reach the end, you’ll have watched the landscape change in ways you probably didn’t think were possible in a single state.

It’s one of those once in a lifetime roadtrips that you’ll remember forever ✨ So what do you think? Would you take this drive?

Just because I live outdoors every day doesn’t mean I’ve given up all the things I used to enjoy when I lived in an apartment.

I still like watching movies. I still like playing video games. I like having those little comforts that make a night at home feel like a night at home. The only difference is that my living room looks a little different these days. I’ve had more video game nights with friends out in the woods than I can count, certainly more than I would if I still lived in an apartment.

After years of living on the road, I’ve realized that vanlife doesn’t have to mean giving up the things I love. Sure, I have to be more intentional with what I bring, but if it’s important, I make space for it.

For this little off-grid setup, I’m using the @jackeryusa HomePower 2000 Plus v2. With 2,048Wh of capacity, up to 2,400W of AC output and a whisper-quiet design, I can run the things I want without needing to be plugged into the grid or listening to a generator run all night. And if I ever need more power, the system is expandable up to 12kWh, so I can start with what I need now and add more capacity down the road.

People have had their doubts, we’ve even been accused of trailering our bus to these distant locations just to snap a photo of it, because surely it’s not capable of driving there on its own, right?

I’ll admit, I can’t completely blame them. This year has tested us more than usual keeping this old VW on the road but we still wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Sure, we’ve had our fair share of struggles, but the positives of traveling in this bus far outweigh the negatives. It’s hard to explain without writing a whole essay here, but there’s just a charming way this thing forces us to slow down. You know what I’m talking about if you’ve had the pleasure of traveling in one.

And honestly, one of the best parts of owning an old VW has nothing to do with the bus itself.

It’s the people it’ll help you meet along the way. People who will stop what they’re doing to help you get back on the road, share a part, offer a place to stay, or just remind you that you’re not alone when things go wrong.

We’ve been on the receiving end of that generosity more times than we can count and for that, we will always be grateful 🧡💛

It’s just Lola and myself again on the road. The past month was a whirlwind of repairs and unexpected challenges, but we managed to slowly overcome them. The bus is fixed and we’re moving again. I can’t describe how good it feels to be back out here.

We dropped off Hannah, she’s somewhere on the mountain in front of me (which is crazy). For now, it’s just me and the dog. And I think that’s plenty enough.

As I write this, bulldozers are unnecessarily destroying an endangered desert to build a road that isn’t needed in this beautifully remote national park.

When we first started our national park journey, we eagerly watched Ken Burns’ National Parks: America’s Best Idea. In that documentary, it details how the national park system is in essence the most democratic idea this country has ever conceived. That the land belongs to you and me and is to be protected in the highest form of the law in this great nation.

Unfortunately, that promise is being broken. At Big Bend, the DHS is now cutting through the desert to make way for patrol roads and border infrastructure. The administration has even waived some of the environmental and public-land protections that were created to prevent exactly this kind of damage. I could go into so much more detail, but basically all you need to know is this landscape is a barrier in of itself and accounts for virtually no illegal crossings due to the unrelenting desert that stretches beyond it.

The hour is dire and with every passing minute, more of this National Park is being destroyed. If you want to learn more about what you can do to help, please visit @nobigbendwall

The most American thing you can do is protest and speak out. We simply cannot stand for this 🇺🇸

We’ve unfortunately been reminded lately that sometimes things don’t go exactly how you envisioned them. The perfect plans we make aren’t immune to speed bumps and set backs; and these extra challenges become part of the overall journey whether we like it or not.

With our 52 year old camper we call home, we’ve always been well aware of this and have embraced fully the trials of breaking parts and engine maintenance. That being said, it certainly wasn’t in my plans this year for my body to break down on the Pacific Crest Trail.

1,333 miles in and just past the halfway marker, a swollen foot led me to seeking out the doctor who confirmed that I have given myself a stress fracture and would have to take time off the trail to heal. At the same time, Hunter and Lola’s adventures also came to an abrupt halt when we learned that the cylinders and pistons overheated, causing damage to the newly built engine.

Needless to say, we both pushed a little too hard lately. But through this all we remain positive and hopeful, because set backs don’t equal failure, and the dreams we had for this year won’t be abandoned yet. I fully intend on getting back out on the trail to finish what I started, and we are no stranger to dropping the engine and doing everything we can to get back on the road.

The current plan is to rest up the foot to get back on the trail as soon as possible, but to rejoin trail friends to finish Oregon and Washington before heading back to Northern California to complete the trail where the break happened. This would give me the best chance of hiking every mile up to the Canadian border before winter comes for the northernmost mountains along the trail.

We’re pretty uncertain how getting back on the trail will go and how Hannah’s foot will hold up, but we know we’ll both get through this time of rest and repair with our hopes high! 💛🥾
