🎞️ "Urban Paddling"
🏆️ Winner: Shorts
🎥 Directed by Matt Morris (@snowbankproductions)

Matt Morris learns that boating is allowed on a little lake in the core of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. He proceeds to design and then build a 12' 5" canoe that weighs just over 11 pounds and features a clear vinyl skin. He also designs a towing system that allows him to hook the canoe to his bicycle for a ride down a city trail to the lake.

The 5 minute film wraps up highlighting the peaceful moments with the canoe while he uses some of the innovative and at times hilarious paddles he has crafted--all right in the heart of the bustling city.

🎞️ "Born Of Ice"
🏆️ Winner: Environmental
🎥 Directed by Viktor Björnström, Erik Holmer

Sjoa. Among whitewater kayakers, the name carries something legendary, almost mythical. A river in Norway that today is associated with an entire region of extraordinary paddling waters. What few people know is that the source of this power is fading, just as it is in many other parts of Europe, making the future of whitewater kayaking increasingly uncertain.

We follow Erik, an Olympic kayaker, as he and his friends move through the landscape, floating between white mountain peaks and green valleys. Here, he rediscovers a joy for paddling that he has long been missing. But the retreating glaciers surrounding them stir emotions and raise questions within Erik, questions that seem best answered by nature itself.

🎞️ "North to South - The French River Documentary"
🏆️ Winner: Amateur
🎥 Directed by Pete Parke (@latitudes.films)

In the deep autumn of 2020, Peter and friends took on the challenge of canoeing the entire length of the beautiful and historic French River in northern Ontario, Canada. 170 kms of water was ahead of them, ever changing from wide, to narrow; from ambient, to violent.

The season brought many challenges with the fluctuating weather and temperatures, but also brought a beautiful display of fall colours for them to absorb as they paddled along.

Paddle Canada proudly stands with our Indigenous peoples on this very important day 🧡

As paddlers, we spend time a lot of our time on lands and waters shaped by generations of Indigenous Peoples. Reconciliation asks us to better understand these histories, recognize the responsibilities we share, and consider how we can move forward with greater respect, awareness, and care.
