Weโ€™re happy to open Nextones once again this year with Hydromantique (White Gladis) in the striking setting of Terme di Premia @premia_terme Hydromantique is an underwater listening session by @michelademattei with @palmwine, curated in collaboration with @operativa_arte Contemporanea. Submerged in the water, four diffusers carry a 30-minute sequence โ€” underwater stories, spoken word, and fragments drawn from different musical repertoires, woven into an open narrative structure. At the center of the pool, a submerged terracotta amphora becomes a still presence around which the listening unfolds โ€” an invitation to a collective ritual.First presented as a live performance, Hydromantique will then remain as a temporary installation, with daily listening sessions featuring contributions by Sun Araw and Jenna Sutela.July 16 โ€” 20:30 & 22:30 [4-day pass]July 17โ€“18 โ€” 12:00 PM to 6:00 PMJenna Sutela, an artist working with living sculptures, sound and language to explore open systems from biology to computation. A Sea That Diffracts, a text I wrote about Martinican Shatta, is finally online @hyper___local โ€” glad to see it out in the world! Special thanks to Low Jack @hallaisdelaboue and Yona Mazigh @yonamzg for facilitating the interview with Lijay @axellijay, and to Coraline Kandassamy for her crucial work. This piece is deeply indebted to Mangrovia, a film co-directed by Low Jack and Invernomuto @invernomuto_hq...โ€œNo kick drums. Deep bass. A classic dancehall pattern, though itโ€™s evolving. Thereโ€™s a sense of minimalism, despite the potential for many layers. In Shatta, everything is preciseโ€”every sound has its place.โ€Inextricably linked to Jamaican dancehall, Shatta emerged in the 2000s and 2010s in Volga-Plage, a neighbourhood of Fort-de-France. Palm Wine is a project by Simone Bertuzzi, originally started as a blog in 2009. As an artist, he is half of Invernomuto, a duo operating in the fields of visual art and cross-discipline practices since 2003. For this iteration, the sound was developed in collaboration with Palm Wine and consists of a 30-minute sequence of audio materials assembled into a loose narrative structure, combining underwater stories, spoken words, and fragments from diverse musical repertoires. First presented as a live performance during the festival, Hydromantique (Tilikum) is then made available as a temporary installation with regular playback sessions scheduled throughout the day. Today weโ€™re introducing Italian duo Invernomuto (@invernomuto_hq) โ€” Simone Bertuzzi (@palmwine) and Simone Trabucchi (@stillagramstill) โ€” currently in residency at La Becque through the end of July as part of our Principal Residency Program. Based in Milan, Invernomuto has conducted a series of research projects structured in time and space, from which the artists have derived cycles of interconnected works. Drawing upon a common theoretical basis, Invernomuto adopts an open, rhizomatic approach, developing different outputs that take the form of moving images, sounds, performative actions, and publishing projects, within the framework of a practice defined by the use โ€“ both diffuse and precise โ€“ of different media. Invernomuto investigates subcultural universes using vernacular language as a means of approaching oral cultures and contemporary mythologies. At La Becque, Invernomuto will focus on developing the crucial phases of their โ€˜Tritonโ€™ projectโ€”a cross-media work centered on a personal, portable device that evolves as an open artwork, circulating both physically and digitally. This sentient and portable sculpture, capable of emitting sound and light, analyzes a microcosm and transfers it to an aural dimension. Drawing inspiration from a real colony of tritons, amphibians that have mysteriously inhabited two basins filled with rainwater carved into the rock of Pietra Perduca in Val Trebbia, close to the artistsโ€™ birthplace, the project seamlessly blends ancient myths with contemporary technology, prompting deep reflection on the intricate interplay between nature, sentient feelings, and digital technology. Pushing further their artistic investigation into palimpsests and timelines, โ€˜Tritonโ€™ aims to construct a new physical format that allows the integration of an articulated timeline composed of sounds, texts, actions, allowing itself to be enriched by a wide spectrum of contributors. A real pounding for the human earยป says Anyelo Valerio, a member of Musicolos Italia. The musicรณlogo โ€“ a Dominican term for DJ โ€“ is the master of ceremonies of kitipo gatherings: an arena of sound systems mounted on top of and in the trunk of cars.โ€At the Hyperlocal Festival, on Saturday, September 21st, you will find a gathering of kitipo by Musicologos Italia along with La Speziaโ€™s Comunidad, the largest Dominican Republic community in Europe.
