BIG SEE Architecture Award 2026

“By The Book” pavilion transforms reading into a playful, spatial experience for Chicago’s North Lawndale community. Inspired by floating book pages, the lightweight aluminum structure moves with wind and interaction, creating a sense of openness and imagination. Hidden letters within its patterns invite discovery and storytelling. As part of a broader landscape initiative, the pavilion becomes a vibrant hub for learning, play, and community connection.

Let’s meet by the book! The By The Book pavilion is a haven, an inspiration, a playscape, and a landmark for Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood, its children, and their caregivers. By evoking weightlessness – book pages floating in midair – the pavilion design embodies the idea that reading can happen anywhere, at any time, transporting the reader to other worlds. Fabricated out of aluminum, the four-part installation moves with the wind and responds to the bodies that might rest against its stalks.

Hidden in the colorful patterns and in the shadows the cutouts cast on the ground on sunny days are letters that can be rearranged to follow one’s imagination. The pavilion was the final piece of a series of landscape-focused interventions on the site, including a passive stormwater management landscape funded by the Chicago Resilient Corridors project and a Playful Learning Landscape installation focused on nature, water, word play, and conservation sponsored by the Chicago Children’s museum. Together, these site interventions define and activate a welcoming, purposeful hub for local residents to foster care and connection to each other and to their public spaces.

Exciting progress at our Fenix project with one of our favorite clients: a non-profit clinic offering affordable healthcare to Central and South American immigrants, who also happen to believe in the power of design to lift people's spirits!

Southern light is coming through the interior windows into the atrium. We can already imagine kids peeking through the low-to-the-ground window we designed just for them! taken in Highwood, Illinois by @palmyraarchitecture

Revisiting Not All White Walls, the project that launched PALMYRA in 2019.

An enormous thank you once again to @cca_arch_div and @keithkrumwiede for giving PALMYRA founding Principal Palmyra Geraki the opportunity to design the year-end exhibition at California College of the Arts! Thank you also to: the CCA exhibitions department, the show's curators, the student workers who assisted with install, and the amazing CCA students for their work, which gave life to the white and not white walls of this exhibition.

PALMYRA is proud to be a FINALIST in this year's AIA Chicago’s Design Excellence Awards.

The exhibition design NOT ALL WHITE WALLS, previously an A+Award winner, showcases a wide range of work from different creative disciplines while maintaining a cohesive attitude towards the space, a former Greyhound bus maintenance garage converted into an academic building for studio arts. The four immersively colorful rooms that punctuate the expansive footprint of the exhibition not only mitigate the grand scale of the existing architecture and ease wayfinding but also function as thresholds between the central Nave and a sequence of interconnected smaller spaces, resulting in a fluid, intimate, and integrated viewing experience.

Join us at Designight 2024 on Thursday, September 5, 2024 as we celebrate this award and find out if we have won the Citation of Merit or the top Honor Award! And congratulations to all other finalists!

All are welcome to attend this two-part event, held at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance and the Harris Theater Rooftop Terrace in Millennium Park. More information and tickets can be found at www.AIAChicago.org/Designight2024.

'The Living Room at Parque del Espolón' reimagines the typology of the kiosk as an open, traversable, and yet intimate space - a site of urban domesticity - rather than a stage raised from the ground.

This Friday afternoon (April 9, 3-6pm EST) I am co-hosting an ACSA workshop on Alternative Frameworks for Architectural Practice and the Cooperative Model with Ashton Hamm @uxoarchitects, Chase Robinson @chase_robinson10, Christian Rutherford, Gabriel Cira @arch_cira, Martha Kriley @marthakriley, Matthew Okazaki @matthewokazaki, Peggy Dreamer @peggydeamer, Quilian Riano @quilianriano, and Shawhin Roudbari @shawhin.roudbari.

Registration is free and open to the public! You can sign up here:
https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUlf-ChrTMsH9B6baTPZLKH-Swd2BclOkOU

More information can be found here:
https://www.acsa-arch.org/webinars/alternative-frameworks-for-architectural-practice/

The workshop explores the potential of cooperative models in architecture, which espouse collaboration in lieu of competition. These models leverage resource and knowledge distribution as alternatives to prevailing free-market modes of contemporary practice. By rethinking the profession in terms of the social, economic, and political potential offered by these practices, architects may foreground care over profit and commonized use-values over exchange values in order to create more equitable, just, and livable communities. In this workshop, member of the Architecture Lobby guide attendees through a series of explorations to collectively depend our understanding of cooperative models in architectural practice and education.
