BIG SEE Architecture Award 2026

“By The Book” pavilion transforms reading into a playful, spatial experience for Chicago’s North Lawndale community. Inspired by floating book pages, the lightweight aluminum structure moves with wind and interaction, creating a sense of openness and imagination. Hidden letters within its patterns invite discovery and storytelling. As part of a broader landscape initiative, the pavilion becomes a vibrant hub for learning, play, and community connection.

ICYMI ⏮️ Earlier this week, CAPX, the Architecture / Interior Architecture Department, and student group NOMAS partnered to host our second annual architecture portfolio review! Students and alums used this time to connect with leading firms to receive personalized feedback on their materials.

We love watching students get more involved in their areas of focus and advance their careers while at SAIC. We’re also so grateful to the 12 firms for taking time out of their day to review student and alum portfolios.

See you all again for this event next year!

We recently wrapped up the third cycle of the Chicago Sukkah Design Festival where Architecture for Public Benefit served as Community Design Director. The project connects community designers with North Lawndale organizations to create sukkahs, small structures that celebrate the Jewish harvest holiday of Sukkot. After the festival, the sukkahs are designed to take on a second long-term life that serves a unique community need. The festival is rooted in participatory design and community workshops, fostering design literacy and encouraging open dialogue among all involved.

Co-hosted by Could Be Design @couldbearchitecture, Lawndale Pop-Up Spot @lawndalepopupspot, Open Architecture Chicago @openarchcollab, and Architecture for Public Benefit, this year’s festival featured five new sukkahs, conceived, designed and built by the following collaborative teams:

1 - Overstory: Sukkah as Hospital Stoop
Design/Build Contributor: Lindsey Krug (@lindseyok), Andres Camacho (@_acamacho), and Brad Silling (@bradleysilling)
Community Collaborator: Sinai Chicago / Mount Sinai Hospital campus (@sinaichicago)

2 - Twirl / Gira: Sukkah as Communal Table
Design/Build Contributor: Cooperation Racine @cooperationracine
Community Collaborator: Street Vendor’s Association of Chicago

3 - Bring Your Own Brick
Design/Build Contributor: Office of Dillon Pranger (@pranger.dillon), with Nailah Golden (@nailah.online)
Community Collaborator: Homan Grown

4 Left - By the Book: Sukkah as Literacy Landmark
Design/Build Contributor: Palmyra Geraki (@palmyraarchitecture) _ and Alt Space (@alt_chicago)
Community Collaborator: Open Books (@openbookschicago) and Chicago Children’s Museum (@chicagochildrensmuseum)

4 Right: Sharing Sukkah: Sukkah as Living Structure & Seed Exchange
Design/Build Contributor: Andrea Jablonski @whackminx, Martha Bayne @marthabayne, and Sheila Sachs @smmsachs
Community Collaborator: Douglass Branch of @chicagopubliclibrary and SAIC at Homan Square @saicathomansquare

This week, we’ll spotlight each of the 5 sukkahs that were installed in the 2024 Chicago Sukkah Design Festival. While the festival is now closed, you can still explore these fantastic architectural installations on site at James Stone Freedom Square for a few more days (!) before they are de-installed, relocated, and re-installed (in the coming weeks) at the facilities of the community organizations that participated in their design. Upon re-installation, each sukkah will provide as a more permanent program space aligned with organization’s mission-driven activities.

Let’s meet by the “book!” This sukkah is a haven, an inspiration, a playspace, and a landmark for the North Lawndale neighborhood and, especially, its children and their caregivers. By evoking weightlessness—book pages floating in midair—the sukkah design embodies the idea that reading transports the reader to another world, and emphasizes Open Books’ belief that reading can happen anywhere at any time. After the Festival, the sukkah will relocate to 16th Street near Hamlin Avenue, on a site that’s part of the Resilient Corridors Project. In addition to the sukkah, the site will also host a Playful Learning Landscape (@playful.learning.landscapes) installation focused on nature, water, word play, and conservation. Playful Learning Landscapes is a nationwide initiative that transforms everyday public spaces into joyful learning opportunities. Together, the site interventions aim to define and activate a welcoming, purposeful hub for local residents to foster care and connection to each other and to their public spaces.

In our mission to uplift purpose-driven businesses and redesign workplace environments, we’ve dedicated a portion of our work to supporting women-owned and led design practices. So far, we’ve partnered with seven incredible firms, helping them navigate industry challenges and grow their companies. It’s inspiring to hear these leaders’ stories and witness their passion for their work. Their journeys underscore the importance of celebrating female leadership and the opportunity to rethink workplace norms, creating environments and systems that support the diverse needs of women in practice.

Architects play an essential role in shaping the fabric of our cities. At this year’s Arts in the Dark, we are forming an Architects’ Guild to celebrate our creative contributions, passion for design, and love of Chicago. Forty-nine architects will create individual headpieces, each reinterpreting a beloved spatial moment in the city. Together, the collective will march along State Street in a seven-by-seven grid, reminding us that each individual plays a part in creating and reimagining Chicago’s vibrant cultural landscape.

Architecture for Public Benefit has organized the group and designed one of the 49 headpieces, with ours inspired by the universally accessible Millenium Park Bridge. We also created six signature banners that will delineate our collective and speak to our impact on the built-environment.

The parade will take place this Saturday, October 19 at 6pm on State Street in downtown Chicago and will include creatives from across the city. It’s really fun for all ages and not to be missed!

If you’ve never been, the #artsinthedark is an annual celebration and parade of Chicago’s cultural landscape. Recognizing Halloween as an artists’ holiday, the parade takes place on State Street and brings together artists and creatives from various disciplines. This will be the first time we have an #architectsguild. Big thank you to @aiachicago for all your help and for serving as a promotional partner and to Mark Kelly for his vision and support. @artsinthedark @luma8chicago

If you can’t make it, follow along with the #architectsguild tag.
