Discover Maxime Biou’s (@maximebiou )latest works in his second solo show, ‘D’ombre et de lumière’, on view until November 29 at pal project!

“A distinct style is emerging, one that calls to mind painters deeply attuned to silence, to still days, and perhaps above all to that faintly silvery light that lingers over certain landscapes: the northern worlds of Vermeer or Hammershøi—places Maxime Biou has never visited—the dusty Spain of Velázquez, where he spent time, and the Île-de-France of Fantin-Latour or Corot, where he was born and still lives.
In Corot’s early work in particular, I recognize in Biou’s compositions a kind of rugged tenderness, a modesty that borders on the awkward—expressed in lines striving for clarity, yet softened by the painting itself, by a play of colors that casts a broad, supple veil of uncertainty across the surface.”

Take this green plant or this bowl, repeated in a series where one delights in spotting, beneath the painter’s touch, the subtle shifts in texture or tone that distinguish each version of the same subject. In the end, that hardly matters: what counts is preserving a sense of neutrality, to give the object at the heart of the work the full attention it deserves. In this way, painting once again becomes what it ought to be — an act of devotion.

And just as Albers titled his series Homage to the Square, Biou might well call his own canvases Homage to the Green Plant, Homage to the Plates, or Homage to the Earthenware Bowl. Anyone trying to describe them would need that same playful humility, that same unpolished tenderness, to convey the pleasure and calm found in contemplating paintings bathed in such peaceful light.

‘D’ombre et de lumière’, a solo show by @maximebiou , is on view at pal project until November 29, 2025!

Maxime Biou paints small, unassuming things - the kinds of objects that usually pass before our eyes without us really noticing them; the necessary yet ordinary elements of everyday life, the very fabric of the banal.

One might be tempted to see these recent paintings as a series of small studies, pure exercises in style - like a pianist’s scales, not necessarily meant to be heard, or in this case, seen, by others. Something that could just as well have been kept private, made simply to refine one’s technique or sharpen one’s way of looking.

Discover @maximebiou ’s latest works in his solo exhibition ‘D’ombre et de lumière’, on view at pal project through November 29, 2025!

As a painter, Maxime Biou is content simply to gaze with affection at the world around him. Once known for his large portraits - most often of those closest to him - he now, like Francis Ponge, takes « the side of things, » turning his attention to subjects far more modest and silent than living beings.
Yet there is a kind of neutrality that shines through in the way Biou paints these things - « quite simply, » one might say. It reflects a deliberate effort to avoid anything that could be perceived as an effect, that is, any posture, or rather imposture, of technique that would replace the simple impression left on the painter’s eye (and to which he strives, at all costs, to remain faithful) by the object he represents; that would insert itself between that eye and the object.

We are thrilled to announce « D’ombre et de lumière », the second solo show of Maxime Biou (@maximebiou ) at the gallery!

With « D’ombre et de lumière », Maxime Biou continues his exploration as a painter attentive to the quiet presences around us. Earthenware bowls, green plants, stacks of plates, or bouquets on the verge of fading - these everyday objects, usually barely noticed, emerge in his work as silent and vibrant companions.

In a deliberately pared-down practice, free of virtuoso effects, the artist captures what strikes his eye with clarity: the object in its light, just there, before him. Repeated at times in series, this attention to motif reveals subtle shifts of tone and texture - intimate tributes to the modesty of the real.

Opening: Thursday, October 16, from 6pm to 9pm

Maxime Biou, a graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Paris, is a painter who began by working from life before incorporating photography into his creative process to achieve greater freedom.
Each of his canvases is carefully composed like a sequence of visual layers, forming a refined aesthetic whole.

We’re pleased to present our last exhibition before the summer break: Eternal Summer, on view at the gallery until August 2, 2025.

Small formats invite us to come closer, to slow down. They don’t impose — they suggest. And in that suggestion, the gaze opens up: sharper, more attentive, more free.

Far from being a stylistic exercise, it’s a way of rethinking presence itself: what makes a work — no matter how small — take up the entire space?

We are pleased to present our last Group show before the summer break ‘Eternal Summer’, at pal project.

"Summer is coming, won’t go away. Summer is coming, it’s here to stay," sing The Strokes in Eternal Summer, like a bittersweet mantra. Summer seeps in everywhere. It's making its way to the gallery too, with the opening of our summer group show.
No set theme, just one rule : Small format.
