Join us next Friday, October 2, 2026 at 6 PM, for “ACTION = LIFE,” presented by LACE (@welcometolace) and PAM (@pamuseum_) as part of One Institute’s (@oneinstitutela) Circa: Queer Histories Festival at STORIES: The AIDS Monument (@theaidsmonument) in West Hollywood.

This marathon of five-minute performances features 14 artists who represent multiple generations and perspectives, and present site-specific interventions that range from spoken word, poetry reading, and performative and poetic actions that respond to the Monument and the history of queer activism.

We are excited to introduce the following performers:
𝗕𝗘𝗡 𝗖𝗨𝗘𝗩𝗔𝗦
Drawing from his queer, non-binary, HIV-positive lived experience, Cuevas’s work spans a wide range of media including sculpture, installation, photography, performance, sound, and—most prominently—knitting.

𝗣𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗬 𝗚𝗢𝗡𝗘
Patty Gone is a poet, artist, and scholar. Her writing has appeared in The Believer, BOMB, Hyperallergic, and Art Papers. She has performed or exhibited at the Queens Museum, Locust Projects, Human Resources, and The Poetry Project.

𝗦𝗘𝗕𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗔𝗡 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗡𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗘𝗭
Hernandez works with and through feminist, queer, indigenous and gender theoretical frameworks as well as notions of collectivity to generate works that complicate Mexican and Chicano narratives in the contemporaneous social imagination.

𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗖𝗨𝗦 𝗞𝗨𝗜𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗗-𝗡𝗔𝗭𝗔𝗥𝗜𝗢
Kuiland-Nazario’s works are long-term research based cross-genre projects exploring extreme states of emotion such as grief, anger and loss influenced by the cultural and spiritual traditions of the African Diaspora.

𝗦𝗢𝗣𝗛𝗜𝗔 𝗟𝗘 𝗙𝗥𝗔𝗚𝗔
Sophia Le Fraga uses objects, images, and poems to explore how language accumulates, circulates, and leaves traces over time. She has exhibited and performed at The Getty Center, JOAN, MOCA, MoMA PS1’s “Greater New York,” Artists Space, Camden Arts Center and PERFORMA.

CASA, together with the Performance Art Museum, presents Música Rebelde, Central America’s Popular Movement Music; an analog mixed media listening series of the music and art of Central America’s 1970-90s revolutions. The two listening sessions will highlight selected vinyl and tape albums from Nicaragua and El Salvador.

This movement included several organized groups of professional and amateur artists, many persecuted and exiled. Their courageous music amplified the voice of the oppressed, gave strength to the fight against imperialism, and acted as a call for international solidarity; delivering powerful messages that still resonate in today’s popular struggle.

On two separate Fridays, CASA welcomes you to enter the living room of the people’s sounds; a recreated living room experience accompanied by live performances and short films by @jenyamaya and @bientrankis reflecting the process behind CASA and the intimate yearning of memory work.

Nicaragua - Friday, October 9, 2026 | 12pm-2pm

El Salvador - Friday, October 16, 2026 | 12pm-2pm

The event will be free at the @pamuseum_ No RSVP required. Food will be provided and made possible by Roxana K. Landaverde. Flyer by @bientrankis 🔥🔥 illustrations by Oscar Vasques & Eduardo Orozco

Thank you to Samuel Vasquez, Edison Calderon, Roxana K. Landaverde, Christian Morales, Alma L. Ruiz-Furlan and Cynthia Gonzalez for the hosting support! More details to follow. by @pamuseum_

On Friday, October 2, 2026 at 6 PM, LACE (@welcometolace) and PAM (@pamuseum_) present “ACTION = LIFE” as part of One Institute’s (@oneinstitutela) Circa: Queer Histories Festival at STORIES: The AIDS Monument (@theaidsmonument) in West Hollywood. We are thrilled to introduce the following performers:
𝗔𝗝𝗔𝗡𝗜 𝗕𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗡𝗨𝗠
Brannum is an undisciplinary artist and researcher whose practice is a meditation on performance, embodiment, and selfhood. Through choreography, text, and sound, they reimagine the ancestral wisdoms of myth, folklore, teaching, and prayer.

𝗞𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗡 𝗘𝗠𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗢 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗦
Contreras is a Queer Peruvian American visual artist from Los Angeles; his practice spans photography, video art, and performance. Topically, his work poses questions about time, space, the lost and nearly-forgotten Hauntology of our physical world; filtered through a Queer Latinx lens of spiritual experience and expression.

Dacity is an LA-based drag performer, writer, and LGBTQIA+ advocate whose work blends performance, storytelling, and queer world-building.

As part of the Circa: Queer Histories Festival, LACE (@welcometolace) and PAM (@pamuseum_) present a marathon of five-minute performances under the theme “ACTION = LIFE.”

Friday, October 2, 2026 at 6 PM
at STORIES: The AIDS Monument (@theaidsmonument) in West Hollywood

This program coincides with the “High Performance: A 2-Year Conference (2025–2027)” initiative, dedicated to the LA-based magazine that was the first international art publication devoted exclusively to performance art, and its enduring influence on contemporary art and society. “High Performance” was also the first US-based art publication to dedicate significant editorial coverage to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Looking specifically at queer artists featured in “High Performance” who created work around queer activism and younger artists inspired by this work, these short performances provide an opportunity for the public to gather and engage in both oral histories and performance.

Performers participating include Jerri Allyn, Ajani Brannum, Au Chung aka Dacity, Gabrielle Civil, Kevin Emilio Contreras, Ben Cuevas, Patty Gone, Sebastian Hernandez, Marcus Kuiland-Nazario, Sophia le Fraga, Badly Licked Bear, Caleb Luna, Page Person, and Sheree Rose.

Representing multiple generations and perspectives, these artists present site-specific interventions that range from spoken word, poetry reading, and performative and poetic actions that respond to the Monument and the history of queer activism.

This program is also presented as a part of Fall of Freedom (@falloffreedom), a national call for creative resistance and amplification of all struggles against repression and state violence. taken in The AIDS Monument by @pamuseum_

//PERFORMANCE ART IN CHICAGO\\
Sunday, September 20, 11am
at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago

Leon J. Hilton, associate curator at the Performance Art Museum (PAM) and an associate professor of performance studies at Brown University, moderates this conversation with key figures from Chicago’s performance art history and present, including Lin Hixson, Peter Taub, and Vanessa Damilola Macaulay. Organized on the precipice of the MCA’s 60th anniversary and in tandem with PAM’s two-year exploration of the legacy and lineage of High Performance—the artist-run magazine published in Los Angeles from 1978 to 1997 that declared itself the first international magazine devoted to performance art—the program will use High Performance’s extensive engagement with Chicago’s flourishing performance art scene as a point of departure. The discussion will look across generations to consider the particular conditions from which Chicago’s unique performance art culture emerged: its artist-run spaces, publications, and independent galleries; its schools and institutions; and the informal networks that connected artists and audiences. What has made performance art in Chicago so distinctive? Might the city’s distance from dominant art-world centers (which earlier observers sometimes described, not entirely disparagingly, as its “provincialism”) have afforded particular kinds of experimentation, self-determination, or community? And how have these local histories and infrastructures been sustained, transformed, forgotten, and rediscovered over time to shape the present and future of the art form’s viability in the city?

This program is presented in partnership with the Performance Art Museum as a part of the MCA’s annual Chicago Performs festival.

And Just Like That…our summer programming concludes with our 3rd Annual Scholar Poolside Lecture Performance featuring Laura G. Gutiérrez.

This event was a culmination of our studio happy hours with Asher Hartman, Suzanne Lacy, and Nao Bustamante, and serves to celebrate the work of performance scholars who, similar to PAM’s vision, advance the visibility, legacy, and scholarship of artists working in performance.

Laura’s performance text “ON and OF SKIN and FLESH in Three Acts” is available in its complete form via the LINK IN BIO. Images represent excerpts.

*Special Thanks to our host @dimitia22, @fakingprofessionalism for performance support, PAM Board Chair @alexandro_segade, @yassimazandi for the connection, and, of course, @laura_g_gutierrez.*

Want to stay connected and invited to future special happenings? Reach out to hey@pamuseum.org to join our special text message only invite list or send us a DM!

💦💦💦

Laura G. Gutiérrez is a scholar, educator, administrator, and curator based in Austin, Texas. Gutiérrez’s diasporic literacy and performance studies background allow her to engage with artistic works across disciplinary and geographical divides. She is the Artistic Director of OUTsider (Austin, TX) and programs the organization’s annual festival, which centers queer and trans time-based arts. She is completing a book tentatively entitled Binding Intimacies in Contemporary Queer Latinx Performance and Visual Art.

I’m happy to share that my first book, High Performance: Publishing and the Social Life of Art in Los Angeles, 1978-1997, is under contract with Manchester University Press, as part of the Rethinking Art’s Histories series.

The archive and living network that is High Performance magazine has shaped my research for over a decade. I’m excited to deepen my understanding of the artists, communities, and conversations that shaped this remarkable publication and its role in the history of experimental practice in LA and beyond.

My thanks to Rethinking Art’s Histories editors @amelia.jones.la1987, @alpeshkantipatel, and Tomasz Grusiecki; to Emma Brennan and @manchester_university_press; to Samuel Vasquez and the team at @pamuseum_; to everyone who’s shared their time and input in support of this project; and to the Getty Research Institute of @gettymuseum for its stewardship of the High Performance papers.
