I looked at myself in the clear surface of the enlarged doll display case • and I could see myself vividly • but similar to a hologram I could thru my image as well • so my vision oscillated between myself and those surrounding me •
when my image blurred out of focus • I began to see myself for a moment not as myself but someone else • I’ve tried hard to see myself not as myself but from someone else’s perspective • I’ve tried blurring my eyes in the mirror • I’ve tried imaging how I’m perceived in the world • but somewhere between the foreground and background I saw myself as if it was a first time meeting • and simultaneously I saw everyone that came before me that led to my creation (in the ghostly image of my face) and I started to tear up • unlearning the way I was taught to view myself • and instead • seeing the beautiful chain reaction of endless events that led to this human standing in the case • revealing themselves all at once • staring at my current manifestation • wondering • who is she? • I may never fully know • but • she’s stunning •

Thursday evening last week there was a large fire at my building. I am so grateful for the incredible work of the Los Angeles Fire Department for saving my studio, my pets, and all of my art. It was the closest thing to a miracle I’ve ever experienced.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for “ACTION = LIFE,” presented by LACE and the Performance Art Museum (PAM) as part of @oneinstitutela’s “Circa: Queer Histories Festival” at STORIES: The AIDS Monument.

The evening brought together a range of performances that transformed the space, from spoken word and poetry to rituals and intimate acts of protest. Through a series of five-minute performances, each artist brought their own perspective to the Monument, reflecting on queer history, identity, and the ongoing importance of gathering in community.

We’re so grateful to all of the artists who participated and to everyone who came out to listen, witness, and be part of such a powerful and moving evening. ♥︎
