The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University is thrilled to announce a major new mainstage opera commission, made possible through a generous financial commitment from David (Rice MBA ’84) and Susan Lummis in memory of their daughter, Adelaide Emily Lummis. Composed by Paola Prestini with a libretto by Mark Campbell, this 90-minute one-act work will have its world premiere at the Lucian and Nancy Morrison Theater in Brockman Hall for Opera during the 2029–30 season, with workshops beginning in 2028–29. “Being able to honor the memory of Adelaide while simultaneously bringing together such a powerful cast of creators is a rare moment. This will be an incredibly meaningful new work that already promises to live far beyond our Shepherd School premiere.” said Matthew Loden, Dean of the Shepherd School. This weekend, Maria Popova featured the Young People's Chorus of New York City on The Marginalian. 🕊️ "Meteor of Joy" is original music composed for YPC by Paola Prestini, setting six of Maria's bird divinations, poems by Maria Popova. Our young artists, conducted by YPC's Caitlin Henning, gave them voice. Maria wrote that our singers sang "with their commanding innocence and their tender power." Reading that, I felt it all over again. Thank you, Maria and Paola, for trusting our singers with something so beautiful. Find your voice with others. Ingresso gratuito. by @paolaprestini
Cello, ballet, Butoh dance, and film fuse into a single, living work of art across verses by four poets. Go behind the music of Primero Sueño with composer Paola Prestini! Primero Sueño is a processional opera inspired by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’s 1692 poem, premiered at The Met Cloisters in January 2025. In the Sewing Song, Paola takes a traditional Nahuatl flower song about flowers at a grave and reimagines it as a call and response between the nuns in Sor Juana’s convent. In the opera, it’s a glimpse of their daily life: sewing together, watering plants and sharing playful moments with each other.
