It's taken me so long to post this because I don't have a physical keyboard anymore to write my big blocks of text. On top of that, I watched a lot of shit in July, though I ommitted two movies that I found to be exceptionally mid: "Grave Encounters" and "Horror in the High Desert." I've also been working my way through Abbott Elementary. Almost done with it, so it'll likely be in my August recap.

Spoilers ahead as always.

Context: This movie has no scripted dialogue. James Ward Byrkit made a rough plot outline and gave each actor an index card describing their character's emotions and motivations. A very cool concept that yielded just okay results (At least, in my opinion, of course.)

It's lacking in a little action, but that's probably a pitfall in not having a script. Similarly, some lines come across a bit awkward while others benefit from the natural delivery speaking off the cuff would lend you. Interesting enough to keep me engaged the whole time, but ultimately, a teensy bit nothingburger.

Very pretty movie with another cool concept! That I unfortunately also found a bit underwhelming. The story is alright. The scares were minimal. A fun watch regardless that employs one of my favorite tools in horror: Hidden ghosts. You might catch glimpses of Jack Delroy's late wife if you look closely enough.

This was one of my favorite films of the month, but I'm a little biased and you'll see why. I took notes for this one, so I've got a lot to say.

This movie stars Miles Robbins-- son of Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins-- as Luke. You may know him as Dylan or the "herd of bears" guy from the game, The Quarry. Chukwudi Iwuji-- known best as Murn in season one of Peacemaker-- plays Luke's therapist.

The only critique I really have: Cassie is the worst fucking love interest I've seen so far. Not only is she annoying, she's violent, pretentious, arrogant, rude. I had to tell myself, "Well, Luke has had a tumultuous, traumatic upbringing," to justify his attraction to her.

Robbins and Iwuji put on great performances, pand even Patrick Schwarzenegger grew on me. This movie made good use of callbacks/parallelism within Luke and Daniel's relationship and Mary Stuart by @paper.doll.pages

Baby's first Stephen King book. I started it in June but put it on pause for reasons I can't remember. It's also the *only* book I finished in July. Been watching lots of stuff instead.

I mean, it was alright. I finished it a few weeks ago, so I'm having trouble remembering any thoughts I might've had. I guess that doesn't matter much anyway-- I know no one is reading this. There *was* a bit where one of the walkers is described as looking like a Bataan Death March survivor. I highlighted it on my Kobo and added the annotation: "Uy, Philippines!"

The movie is fresher in my mind because I watched it a few days after reading the book. by @paper.doll.pages

June was slow for my reading habit. Started off with HANGSAMAN. Touted on the Weird Girl Lit ™ subreddit as a haunting, underrated SHIRLEY JACKSON gem. I guess I just didn't get it. It wasn't for me. My attention span couldn't follow the long, winding prose. I can tell you what happened in this book but I couldn't tell you what... I guess, the point was.

SEVERANCE BY LING MA had been on my read list for years. As much as I enjoyed reading it, the ending fell short. A quick and easy read, but with very little pay-off. by @paper.doll.pages

Thank god for the multiple captions update because I watched too much shit in June, and even though I'm already excluding movies I have nothing to say about, I'm still way past single caption character limit. Spoilers ahead as always.

HEAD COUNT (2018): A pretty good film in general, but especially given the budget and other limitations. Two major critiques though: Overuse of creepy musical stings (Some scares might’ve been more effective in silence) and the ending is… not good. Seems rushed, and I don’t think they should’ve done a creature reveal at all if they didn’t have the ability to do it well. Otherwise, fun. I love all the super wide shots that make you think something might happen in the background, and the “Never Have I Ever” scene was ace.

REWATCH - GREEN ROOM (2015): I’m not particularly bothered by gore anymore, but for some reason, this one’s especially brutal. Love Alia Shawkat and Imogen Poots is hot as hell in this movie. CW for Neo-Nazis and RIP Anton Yelchin :(

LARS AND THE REAL GIRL (2007): The only thing I knew about this movie before going in was that there was a sex doll. I wasn’t prepared for how it’d make me feel. I cried at the whole community’s acceptance of Bianca, at Lars’s panic attack, when he reuscitated a teddy bear, and when everyone cheered for his bowling even though he didn’t do a great job. I usually like movies that make me feel like shit, but this was a worthy exception.

RESIDENT ALIEN (2021-2025): This is one of the best fucking shows I’ve ever seen. It’s corny, it’s funny, it’s heart-warming, and the story is good too. The finale was incredibly fitting; I didn’t want to say goodbye. Made me feel how I felt during the finale of “The Good Place,” but somehow I understood that feeling and was willing to embrace it.

(Also D'arcy's actress is also in Silicon Valley, one of my other favorite shows.)

THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU (2026): I don’t think Real Star Wars ™ fans would enjoy this, at least not as much as I did. The story wasn’t bad, it just went on for a little longer than it needed to. I love how they just fucking throw Grogu to show him “jumping.”

WIDOW’S BAY (2026): The first episode was honestly kind of a toug by @paper.doll.pages

I'm a lifelong journaler, but it's been embarrassingly long since I've actually used up a whole notebook! This one lasted me from March 2026 to June 2026.

I have a bad habit of starting anew if I feel like I've made too many mistakes or written too negatively. I'm trying to break that.

Equally excited and apprehensive to move on to this beautiful guy by @leelajournals! I think this has to be the prettiest, highest quality journal I've ever had, and I'm happy this bitch is so thick-- that means it'll be with me for a long time. (-: by @paper.doll.pages

Kind of a slow month. "Remarkably Bright Creatures" is a beautiful book that sits somewhere on the outskirts of my usual genres. I cried. No more spoilers than I've already given-- I recommend you read this yourself.

"How to Sell a Haunted House" is the third Grady Hendrix book I've read and so far, my least favorite. SPOILER INCOMING. Hendrix's writing perfectly descriptive, so I didn't mind finishing it. I guess I was just disappointed that this book turned out to be about puppets. There is technically a ghost, yes, but said ghost is also a puppet. by @paper.doll.pages

A lot to get into. Major spoilers ahead!

REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES (2026): The book was beautiful, and I couldn't *not* watch it when I found out Lewis Pullman was cast. I think this film did a good job as far as book adaptations go. I cried at Tova sending Marcellus home in both the book and the movie.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 1 (2006) & 2 (2026): The first movie was on my watchlist for years and I have to admit-- I thought it was sooo nothingburger. I couldn't imagine why it would need a sequel and what they'd do in it. And then I watched the sequel and enjoyed it far more than it's predecessor. I'm just disappointed Andie didn't hit Miranda with a, "That's all," at the end.

Bonus slide for my favorite Amari fits!

BRING HER BACK (2025): This movie met every expectation, and by that, I mean it was a frustrating and perturbing watch. I'm concerningly unfazed by horror and brutality, so you know this movie did its job. The kids acted their asses off especially. Big ups to Sora Wong for absolutely nailing her breakout role!

BIG MISTAKES - SEASON 1 (2026): I came into this with *zero* expectations; I was just looking for some background noise. But since I love Dan Levy, I knew I'd have at least a little fun. I ended up engaged the whole way through and I'm eagerly awaiting the second season.

NOPE (2022): Another one that met expectations to a T. I just thought Daniel Kaluuya dying was unnecessary. Keke Palmer does an Akira bike slide and Angel-- my unexpected favorite--  picks a thimble Monopoly token which reminds me of Peacemaker, because everything reminds me of Peacemaker now.

BUG (2006): Like "Bring Her Back," this movie was incredibly effective, so I will probably never rewatch it. I think the most uncomfortable part is that I feel like I could easily wind up like Agnes and Peter. Ashley Judd and Michael Shannon put on insane performances. Shannon was creepy as fuck. My favorite scene was after they start finding "aphids" in the bed and the camera cuts rapidly between the ceiling fan and Agnes's face. It felt familiar. by @paper.doll.pages

Not a whole lot to show for April, but here we go!

THE GOOD PLACE (2016-2020): I'd started this show several years back, but never finished. This is quick, low-effort binge material. Very cute, very funny, and very well-developed characters with great chemistry. The very last episode had me feeling sad and empty, like I knew I'd miss these characters very much after they're gone.

Shoutout Jason Mendoza, some of the best FilAm representation I'd seen. Really wish I'd been able to meet him at Collective Con but I blew all my money on the Peacemaker boys. At least he walked past us, like a foot away. Bortles! Sidenote: I was excited to recognize some of the minor character actors from "Search Party," one of my favorite shows!

THE SUBSTANCE (2024): I'm a little apprehensive to say that I put off watching this for a while because Margaret Qualley is one of those celebrities that inexplicably annoy the shit out of me. I know she's well-loved, and this is actually the first and only thing I've seen her in. Predictable plot, but I think it makes up for it stylistically-- I was engaged the whole time. I'm in love with the carpet, kitchen, and wide-open window in Elisabeth's apartment. by @paper.doll.pages
