A kidnapped couple, Ahmed Abubakar Zakka, his wife and their six-month-old daughter, Fatima, have regained freedom.
According to sources, the victims were released on Thursday and were on their way back to Kaduna metropolis as of the time of filing this report.

Details of their release remained sketchy, but a retired security officer who had been working with his team to secure their freedom confirmed the development to our reporter.

The individual, who requested anonymity, said the victims were returning home in a vehicle with his driver.

“Yes, they are on their way back home with my driver. It was the efforts of my team and some private individuals that led to their release,” he said.
Zakka, his wife and their six-month-old daughter were abducted from their residence in Millennium City, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, on October 6, 2026.

A video showing Zakka and his daughter in the custody of the abductors went viral on social media days after the incident, sparking widespread outrage across the country.

PAP FOCUS REPORT

Nigeria Faces 31,400 Projected Heat Deaths as Super El Niño Threatens Sahel

Nigeria could record an estimated 31,400 additional heat-related deaths between September 2026 and February 2027 as an exceptionally strong El Niño threatens to intensify temperatures across the Sahel, according to a study by the University of Chicago’s Climate Impact Lab.

The projection, reported by The Gazette Nigeria, places Nigeria among the countries expected to suffer the highest number of additional heat-related deaths during the period.

The study estimates that countries across the Sahel could experience a combined 66,800 additional heat-related deaths compared with a normal year. Sudan is projected to record approximately 17,500 deaths, followed by Niger with 10,000 and Chad with 8,000.

Researchers based their estimates on seasonal temperature forecasts and evidence examining the relationship between high temperatures and mortality across thousands of regions worldwide.

The projected figures represent additional deaths associated with extreme heat compared with a normal year. They are estimates, not confirmed deaths, and actual outcomes will depend on weather conditions and the measures taken to protect vulnerable populations.

The report also highlights concerns about the ability of poorer communities to cope with rising temperatures, particularly where access to reliable electricity, cooling facilities and healthcare is limited.

Researchers have recommended early-warning systems, public health outreach, cooling centres, hydration stations and improved hospital preparedness to reduce the potential impact.

The projections underscore the need for governments and relevant agencies to strengthen heat-response measures as the region prepares for potentially dangerous temperatures.

The circumstances surrounding the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) 931 aircraft crash in Igbokoda, which claimed the lives of 25 people, have come under renewed scrutiny following allegations by the brother of Sergeant Esther Ani, one of the victims.

Ani’s brother alleged that his sister informed him that the aircraft had developed a technical fault in Benin City on Sunday, October 4, a day before the fatal crash. According to him, the aircraft was grounded overnight for repairs, leaving his sister stranded and prompting her to request N17,000 from him for transport fare.

He further alleged that the aircraft took off shortly afterwards and crashed the following morning, raising questions about the reported technical fault and the safety checks conducted before departure.

A Broader Question About Personnel Welfare

Beyond the allegations surrounding the crash, the victim’s brother reportedly questioned why Air Force personnel had yet to receive their September salaries several days into October.

The reported request for N17,000 in transport assistance also raises questions about the welfare support available to military personnel, particularly when stranded away from their duty stations. However, these allegations do not establish that salary delays caused the tragedy.

Questions That Demand Answers

The central issue remains whether any preventable failure occurred before the aircraft took off.

Did the aircraft develop a technical fault in Benin City on October 4? If so, what maintenance and safety checks were performed before it was cleared for flight?

A transparent investigation is essential to establish the facts, ensure accountability and help prevent another tragedy. The allegations remain unverified, while the Nigerian Air Force maintains that the fault was resolved before departure.
