So….I was inducted into the Order of St. Michael shortly before leaving the Army. And just this week I was inducted into the Order of St. Maurice.
As a young private, the infantry OSM was one of the awards that I really wanted to earn

I was humbled to have been nominated for the Order of Saint Michael, and I I’m even more humbled to have nominated for the Order of Saint Maurice.

It may seem small and not a lot, but to my nominator for both awards thank you. by @para_cheems

-History Monday-
The second amphibious operation conducted by the 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion was Operation SHINGLE, the Allied invasion of Anzio, Italy, on 22 January 1944. Following the smaller Ventotene operation, this was an entirely different type of mission: the entire battalion was committed as part of the invasion force. The 509th was attached to Colonel William O. Darby’s Ranger Force, alongside the U.S. Ranger battalions. Operation SHINGLE was intended to place VI Corps behind the German Gustav Line, threaten the roads leading toward Rome, and force German forces opposing Fifth Army farther south to withdraw. The main landings began at approximately 0200, and the 509th’s unit history records the battalion coming ashore around 0300 at X-Ray Yellow Beach, adjacent to Anzio. Fighting as infantry rather than parachuting into battle, the Geronimos helped the Rangers secure the port area and eliminate or occupy German coastal-defense positions. German resistance on the beaches was unexpectedly light, allowing Allied forces to achieve almost complete tactical surprise.

Once ashore, the 509th quickly transitioned from an amphibious assault force into conventional infantry defending and expanding the Anzio beachhead. While the Rangers concentrated around Anzio itself, the 509th pushed into the flat farmland and road network surrounding Anzio and Nettuno. On 27 January, B and C Companies were ordered toward a key road junction near Padiglione, as Allied commanders attempted to widen the beachhead before the Germans could assemble sufficient reinforcements. The Germans reacted rapidly, however, moving formations toward Anzio and surrounding the beachhead with increasingly strong defenses. The 509th was fortunately detached from the Ranger force before the disastrous 30 January attack on Cisterna, in which much of Darby’s Ranger force was destroyed or captured. The battalion remained heavily engaged around the beachhead, eventually fighting some of its hardest actions near Carano, where its resistance to German counterattacks contributed to the unit receiving a Presidential Unit Citation, and would be among the first allied forces to land on the beach. taken in Anzio, Italy by @para_cheems
