-History Monday-
29 August 1942. While training with the British Army’s 1st Airborne division in England, the 509th would conduct the lowest mastac exit at 143 feet. The paratroopers were leaving their C-47s at an extraordinarily dangerous altitude. There was almost no time between exiting the aircraft and reaching the ground; the parachutes had only enough altitude to deploy, inflate, and slow the men before landing. A malfunction that might have been survivable during a normal training jump left virtually no opportunity for recovery. The extreme altitude reflected the aggressive airborne doctrine being developed during the early years of the war. The Americans trained extensively with British airborne forces, conducting mass tactical jumps, night operations, and long-distance forced marches to prepare themselves for combat.

The experience helped forge the reputation of the future 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion—“Geronimo.” Only a few months later, on 8 November 1942, the unit conducted the first U.S. Army combat parachute assault of World War II, flying roughly 1,500 miles from England during Operation Torch to attack objectives near Oran, Algeria. The 143-foot jump therefore stands as more than an airborne stunt: it illustrates the exceptionally demanding training undertaken by the men who would become some of America’s earliest combat paratroopers, and remains the lowest altitude MASTAC in Airborne history.

“I just wanna jump man”

Shout out to the old Geronimo on graduating IBOLC. Man has every requirement a Paratrooper needs, and has always maintained his dedication to JM duties, and aiding those in getting their whiteslip. Proud that he was selected to become an Infantry Officer, but his first assignment is Hood? With how bad the Airborne community is hurting for JMs, what’s a jumpy boi gotta do to pull him to an Airborne unit, or he’ll even back here to Alaska where he spent 7 years haha?

So….I was inducted into the Order of St. Michael shortly before leaving the Army. And just this week I was inducted into the Order of St. Maurice.
As a young private, the infantry OSM was one of the awards that I really wanted to earn

I was humbled to have been nominated for the Order of Saint Michael, and I I’m even more humbled to have nominated for the Order of Saint Maurice.

It may seem small and not a lot, but to my nominator for both awards thank you.
