Slush cast pewter, acid etched copper
Galena Sardamova and Paris Bezanis

Exhibited at the @oslotriennale 2026 'What if Nature Comes First?'

Across the Black Sea littoral, salt and mud have long linked coastal geology to bodily care. From state sanatoria to informal practices, these landscapes operate at once as source, clinic, workplace, and archive.

The installation translates therapeutic landscapes into material trace, visual evidence, and oral history. Like footprints held only briefly in wet sediment, the casts carry memory loosely, treating landscape as an active participant in the production of care, social relations, and environmental knowledge.

Frames are pressed into wet mud, where geometric resolution is lost through the material exchange and only negative traces of form remain. These negatives are cast in pewter by slush casting, producing thin shells of material evocative of the thin skins of mud applied to bodies for treatment. Copper plates, acid etched with imagery from three domains — landscape, body, and protocol — are then embedded back into the object and follow the material through a cycle.

The landscape is where it begins, unpeopled at first glance, but marked throughout by salt piles, mud-coated basins, and footprints. The body is where the material is taken in, as people float, coat themselves, and sit with it. The protocol is where landscape and people are socialized via structured choreographies; a single dose moves from skin into a collective setting, coordinating bodies with each other and returning them to the landscape.

The title 'The Region of the Heart is Left Free' refers to a long-standing balneological practice: mud covers the whole body except the area over the heart, a gesture that points to the belief in the cure and the embodied attachment to the landscape.

Thank you to the Oslo Architecture Triennale team, and Director and Chief Curator @neegamwee for the invitation.

Essay: 'Architecture as Thermal Exchange: Designing with Heat' for the Catalog of the Bahrain National Pavilion.

In the 'Social Thermal', architecture confronts the Anthropocene's acceleration paradox: technological interventions designed to control climate amplify the very conditions they mitigate, creating cycles demanding further intervention. Rather than fixed solutions, the Bahrain pavilion proposes adaptive infrastructure operating in "non-equilibrium". Architecture becomes perpetual negotiation where thermal exchange orchestrates social space, re-calibrating continuously within ecological feedback loops.

'A Kind of Language' exhibition design and visual essay for @fondazioneprada by sub.global

The visual essay reflects on the logic of story-boarding by treating composition as method, moving between physical and digital workflows. Referencing the exercise of designing the scenographic layout of each storyboard, the visual essay layers multi-frame techniques, depth maps, and control-net generated imagery to assemble and test scenes as an iterative act rather than a finished image.

Yard Grotesque with @fergarridocarreras

Overlooked architectural fragments in Cambridge, MA—gargoyles, trims, and carvings—typically dismissed as background noise are here collected and re-calibrated for contemporary review.

Using high-resolution 3D scanning and CNC fabrication, these minor details are captured, scaled, skewed, and spliced into misfit hybrids. The result isn’t quite preservation, but a playful clash of heritage, ornament, and digital craft—turning edge-condition ornament into something grotesquely front and center by @paris_bezanis

Hantoor حـنـطور

in collaboration with @saltsaltsalt__

Inspired by the ornamental henna traditions of the donkey races in central Bahrain. Hantoor (horse-drawn carriage, and the name of this donkey)

Stainless steel, cast aluminum.

Produced through OFFCUT/CUTOFF, a workshop raising the question of design with material scarcity and circularity. Set in an environment of industrial production at Awal Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, designers scavenged, processed, and re-tooled offcut materials into new systems and assemblies.

A special thank you to the mentors and organizers @maryamaljomairi @line.tifa @keith_j_l2 @oddsmods @mitarchitecture

And much gratitude to the knowledgeable craftsmen at @awalgulfmanufacturing for their generosity and assistance.

Sitra Set (1 & 2)

Designed and fabricated with Blue Chan @saltsaltsalt__

How to repurpose irregular lengths of bent tube?

A furniture system of components telescopically friction-fit through slight bends in the material. A ball-in-socket joint allows for the dynamic positioning necessary to accommodate irregular leg directionality while maintaining a level table surface.

Polished stainless steel, brushed aluminum.

Geologic surveys reveal significant radon levels in the bedrock of Rodane National Park in Norway, caused by natural emissions and radioactive fallout from the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. Radioactive isotopes became trapped in Scandinavia’s taiga ecosystems, with the gypsy mushroom (Cortinarius caperatus), a reindeer dietary staple, absorbing radon from the soil. This has led to biomagnification, with harmful radiation levels observed in reindeer, particularly in Rondane National Park. Habitat encroachment from human activity further pressures these populations, with studies showing decades of disrupted grazing patterns.

Two Fountains introduces aluminum fountains across grazing grounds to provide reindeer with uncontaminated water and delay rainwater infiltration into radon-rich soil. A fountain for human use is included in a proposed observation cabin. The aluminum water-catchers are composed of cast elements molded off the transient herd. The castings highlight the entangled forces shaping ecological and geological systems, offering a lens to understand and respond to these evolving relationships.

1. Janus Sink. Two mirrored bodies create a basin for human users of the cabin.
2. Fountain Head. Three heads create spouts for a rain-catcher.
3. Blind Cabin. A cabin with a thin roof in tension, which produces a viewshed for reindeer observation.
6. Transect. A water trough composed of 10 distinct leg parts, which use the reindeer's natural geometry to navigate the changing terrain of Rondane.

Geologic surveys of Norway reveal significant radon presence in the bedrock, resulting from natural emissions from the slate rock base and radioactive fallout from the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. Scandinavia, including Norway, experienced heavy contamination as radioactive isotopes became entrapped in taiga ecosystems. The gypsy mushroom (Cortinarius caperatus), a species of mycelium known for its ability to absorb radon from the soil, is a staple in the diet of Norway’s wild reindeer. This ecological relationship has created a pathway for radioactive biomagnification, with radiation levels reaching harmful concentrations in reindeer populations. The impacts are most evident in areas such as Rondane National Park, where reindeer also face displacement due to habitat encroachment from human activity. Over the past four decades, herd movements have consistently shifted outside traditional grazing grounds, reflecting the pressures of expanding human presence.

In the convergence of human, non-human, and geological processes, Two Fountains proposes an intervention sustained across the timescales of animal migration, human development, and geological transformation. The project introduces a series of aluminum fountains across the summer grazing grounds of the wild reindeer. These fountains capture and temporarily hold rainwater, delaying its infiltration into radon-contaminated soil and providing safe water sources for the reindeer. A complementary fountain supplies water to human occupants of a proposed observation cabin, which will serve as a site for research, education, and observation of the reindeer’s interactions with their environment. Engaging with the complex and hidden dynamics transforming Norway’s landscapes, Two Fountains highlights the entangled forces shaping ecological and geological systems, offering a lens to understand and respond to these evolving relationships.
