A Polaroid of David taken by Melissa while interviewing him c. 2004.

Very early in our relationship, Melissa’s deep love for David and his work sort of grandfathered me into my own admiration for him. I don’t always understand—it seemed he and Jesus preferred parables—but I very much have respect for and have been shaped by the way David approached capturing ideas.

The more I got to know David, the more it seemed I understood my own wife. Both seem cut from the same cloth: that strange, wonderful down-to-earth, ‘I-see-you,’ aw-shucks warmheartedness, coupled with an eye on the metaphysical mixed with just the right amount of darkness. It’s all hard to put to words, but David and everything about him became shorthand for language that created depth between Melissa and I. For that shorthand, I owe David more than I could ever put to words.

When I learned he’d passed, it truly felt like we’d lost family. It’s been so fun revisiting David’s legendary one-liners the last few days (keep your eye on the donut, his thoughts on pants, quinoa, etc), but it’s tinged with the real sadness that he’s gone and the world is duller for it.

“The river flows out to the sea.”

Happy birthday, David. See you when the trumpets sound.

A few years back, I had the chance to join for @ranchlands for their annual Bison Works.

Ranchlands has spent over 20 painstaking years working with @nature_org to cultivate a pure herd of North American plains bison as part of a program to revitalize their numbers in the US.

Once a year, using helicopters and dirt bikes, they pull the bison off the range in order to take genetic samples, check for pregnancies and tag new comers.

Dust was a constant companion, but this was one of the most viscerally elemental things I’ve ever experienced.

It’s the last day of the year which of course means finally posting backlogged work.

2024 came in fast and never let up. Financially, it’s been a bit of a mixed bag (starting off just terrible & then leveling off some by summer), but in terms of meaningful work no other year has come close.

January, February and March were spent finishing a project with @ranchlands for @rizzolibooks. It was quite a task to somehow compress the width and breadth of this incredible organization into so tight a space—and an honor to contribute to their important work in such a small way.

Most earnest thank-yous go to my dear friends @saraherowland (for her impeccable writing) and @speakttn & @jonathanniega of @studioclarity (for their skillful design). And of course especially to @dukephillipslll, @tess_leach, and @madelinejorden for all of their patience and trust. This book would not exist without countless hours of their time and unwavering dedication.

煙る野—A Smokey Field

Noyaki or massive, coordinated seasonal controlled burns in Kumamoto revitalize the land and maintain the region’s famous grasslands. Very grateful for the chance to finally shoot some of this year’s events. Nothing could have prepared me for the size and intensity of these fires.
