These faces never go out of style!

With roots in the 1920s, Swiss Giants pansies bring big personality to cool-season gardens. Those colorful petals and cheeky dark “faces”? Still stealing the show a century later.

Cool weather is their moment. Mild-winter gardeners can enjoy established plants through winter; colder-climate gardeners can plan for spring color. Starting from seed? Allow 6–8 weeks indoors before transplanting, following your local planting calendar.

Sow a little history. Grow a lot of happy!

If you want a harvest sooner rather than later, start with crops that move quickly. These five make a good plan for shorter growing windows.

1. Beauty Blend Radish Seeds: Germinates about 4–7 days. 22–32 days to harvest.

2. Organic Arugula Seeds: Germinates about 5–10 days. Baby leaves in about 3–4 weeks.

3. Micro Mini Greens Lettuce Seeds: Germinates about 7–14 days. About 15 days indoors.

4. Space Hybrid Spinach Seeds: Germinates about 7–14 days. About 40 days to maturity.

5. Red Sails Lettuce Seeds: Germinates about 7–14 days. About 45 days to maturity.

Count backward from your first hard freeze before sowing outdoors. If the window is too short, try baby leaves or a suitable indoor tray instead.

Which quick crop would you start this week?

👽🌱 GUESS THE SEED WINNERS! 🌱👽

The mystery seed has been revealed, and it’s KOHLRABI! 💚

Congratulations to our winners! 🎉👏

🏆 @harvesthobbyist (Instagram)

🏆 Edie Hughes (Facebook)

You both guessed correctly! 🎉

Remember our hint about looking like a vegetable from outer space? 👽😂 Well, if you’ve ever seen kohlrabi growing, you know exactly why!

Kohlrabi is seriously one of the coolest vegetables you can grow! Not only does it look like something from another planet, but it’s also incredibly easy to grow and FAST! Many varieties are ready to harvest in just 45–60 days! 🙌🌱

It’s a member of the cabbage family, but instead of forming a head like cabbage, it develops a big, round, crunchy stem right above the soil!

And the flavor? 😍 Think a delicious combination of broccoli stems and mild, sweet turnips! It’s amazing eaten raw, sliced into salads, roasted, sautéed, or even turned into crispy kohlrabi fries! Plus, the leaves are edible too!

Kohlrabi loves cooler weather, making it a fantastic crop for spring and fall gardens! 🍂

Have you ever grown or eaten kohlrabi? I’d love to hear what you think of this funny-looking vegetable! 💚🌱

No yard? A sunny patio or balcony still leaves room to grow food! Give these five crops containers with drainage and enough space for their roots.

1. Little Gem Lettuce Seeds: Germinates about 7–14 days. About 50 days to maturity.

2. Beauty Blend Radish Seeds: Germinates about 4–7 days. 22–32 days to harvest.

3. Little Finger Carrot Seeds: Germinates about 14–21 days. About 60 days to harvest.

4. Bright Lights Swiss Chard Seeds: Germinates about 7–14 days. About 60 days to maturity.

5. Lacinato Kale Seeds: Germinates about 7–14 days. 62 days from transplant.

Cool-season containers can stay outdoors longer in mild regions. Where frost arrives early, focus on baby greens, move suitable pots to protection, or plan an indoor crop.

What would you grow first in a patio pot?

A fall container can look full and colorful without relying on one flower. Try these five for a mix of trailing growth, fragrance, and upright blooms.

1. Cool Wave® Mix Pansy Seeds: 6–8 in tall • trails 24–30 in. Full sun to part shade.

2. 'Bunny Ears' Viola Seeds: Fragrant, playful blooms. Sun to part shade.

3. Snow Crystals Sweet Alyssum Seeds: Fragrant white blooms. Compact, spreading habit.

4. 'Orange Flash' Calendula Seeds: Coppery orange edible blooms. Full sun • well-drained soil.

5. 'Siberian Blues' Dianthus Seeds: Lavender-blue flowers. Full sun • well-drained soil.

This combination suits mild-winter gardens best. Where hard freezes come early, use suitable protection or keep the idea for spring.

Which flower would you put at the center of the pot?

Cold weather doesn’t mean gardening season is over! 🥬❄️

In fact, some vegetables actually taste BETTER after a little frost! Kale is one of our favorites because it’s incredibly cold-hardy, easy to grow, and those chilly temperatures can help bring out its natural sweetness!

And kale isn’t the only one! Spinach, carrots, lettuce, and plenty of other vegetables love growing in cooler weather. 🌱

So don’t put those gardening gloves away just yet! There’s still so much you can grow and harvest throughout the cooler months. Check your Seed to Spoon app to know what you can plant now!

💚 Who else is keeping their garden growing this fall?

Plant a bare root in a sunny, well-drained spot now where your fall planting window is open, and give it room to become a long-lived favorite.

This peony is hardy in Zones 2–8. Fall planting and delivery depend on your location and weather, so check the zone-specific shipping estimate before expecting it to arrive. Keep the soil moist but well drained as roots establish.

‘Sarah Bernhardt’ is included in our end-of-season sale, with select favorites up to 40% off while supplies last. A little planning this fall can bring a lot of pink to future springs!
