I had the pleasure of visiting two Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) participation exercises in Frazier Park and Pine Mountain Club!

The CERT program empowers everyday community members with the knowledge and skills to help prepare for and respond to emergencies. Through training in first aid, communications, and evacuation drills, volunteers learn how to support their neighbors during disasters such as wildfires and earthquakes.

CERT is an integral part of our overall public safety strategy, strengthening community preparedness and the spirit of neighbors helping neighbors.

A big thank-you to all the volunteers who participate in this valuable, county-coordinated program and today’s preparedness exercises. Your dedication helps make our communities safer and more resilient!

The 16th Annual Alumni & Friends Cougar Cookout was held on the beautiful Taft College campus, celebrating the people who continue to make a difference in the Taft community.
This year’s Community Spirit Award was presented to Taft Union High School. We also had a touching tribute honoring Taft College alumnus and Vietnam veteran Roger Brown for his military service and participation in this year’s Honor Flight, graciously sponsored by Safe 1 Credit Union.
Congratulations as well to Doug Keeler on being named Alumnus of the Year! For decades, Doug has been an outstanding reporter and photographer, capturing the people, stories, and spirit of the Taft community.

The Frazier Park Streetscape Project continues to make great progress! Volunteers from Mountain Neighbors and Frazier Mountain High School’s FFA are working hard to beautify the business district and make a positive difference in our community.
Teamwork makes the dream work! The County Public Works team, along with their contractors, is completing major culvert repairs on Frazier Mountain Park Road. This road experienced significant flooding last winter, which cut off access to our Mountain Communities.

The new culvert is a major upgrade from the old piping that was removed. The new, larger rectangular concrete box system is designed to handle increased water flow and provide more room for clearing debris if needed in the future.

It was great to see local residents from Caliente, Twin Oaks, and Walker Basin area that come out for a Meet & Greet with Senior Deputy Bryce Verrell, who has been assigned to serve the area.
A special thank you to Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood and Undersheriff Larry McCurtain for listening to the requests of our residents and for their support and efforts in helping make this assignment happen. KCSO emphasizes working in partnership with communities to address local public-safety needs.

It was an honor to be at the beautiful Adventist Health Tehachapi Valley Hospital celebrating a generous financial gift from Hydrostor. This investment will help strengthen medical services for residents throughout the East Kern region and bring greater access to care closer to home.

It was a day of remembrance at the
Taft District Chamber of Commerce
Mayor’s 9/11 Prayer Breakfast.
It was an honor to be among the dignified speakers who reflected on such a tragic day in our nation’s history. We paused to remember those who lost their lives, the families who endured unimaginable loss, and the heroes who answered the call to serve.
Yet, regardless of the circumstances we face, we remain strong as a people—united by the enduring spirit and conviction of this great country. America has faced challenges before, and together, we will continue to stand strong and endure, no matter what comes our way.

Twenty-five years later, we pause to remember the lives forever changed by September 11, 2001. We honor the thousands of innocent men, women, and children who lost their lives, and we pay tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the first responders, military members, and ordinary Americans who answered the call to help others in their darkest hour. Their bravery reminds us of the strength, resilience, and unity that define our nation. As we mark this 25th memorial, may we continue to honor their legacy by standing together, serving our communities, defending the values that unite us, and cherishing the freedoms we are privileged to share. We remember with solemn hearts, we honor with grateful hearts, and we carry their memory forward—always.

Kern County has proclaimed September as Hunger Action Month!
This month, we’re raising awareness about food insecurity and recognizing the importance of making sure every family in our community has access to nutritious food.
I’m proud to support partners like CAPK, Blue Zones Project Bakersfield, and the Kern County Food Policy Council for the important work they do every day to help fight hunger and build a healthier, stronger Kern County.

A great day with the Mojave Chamber of Commerce providing a D2 economic update and sharing exciting developments happening throughout the region.
We discussed continued activity at the Mojave Air & Space Port, along with other important businesses coming to the area or currently under construction, including the new Pacific Steel Mojave Micro Mill.
We also covered public safety upgrades, including the addition of drones for County Fire and KCSO, as well as improvements to the local park, including a new water tank for the spray park.
Lots of positive things are happening in Mojave and throughout District 2. I appreciate the Mojave Chamber of Commerce for the opportunity to provide an update and continue working together to support our communities and economic growth.
