Every January, road salt leaves a white line on every good pair of boots in Canada.

The biggest name in shoe polish has been around since 1906, and its owner now calls polish a category in long-term decline. Polish is shrinking. Winter isn't.

So I'd build Saltline. Three jars for the three moments of a Canadian winter. Lift for the salt line, Seal in November, Feed in March.

Concept brand, not a real company. Boring Business, Better Brand, part 3.

Give me a neglected category. I'll show you the modern company hiding inside it. 👇

Almost everyone over 45 ends up needing reading glasses. And almost everyone owns four bad pairs scattered around the house.

The biggest name on the drugstore rack is owned by the same company that makes Ray-Ban. They have the design talent. They just don't spend it on a $22 pair.

So I'd build Plus One. A set of three for $65, one for each place you actually read. Kitchen, car, nightstand.

Concept brand, not a real company. Boring Business, Better Brand, part 2.

Every window cleaner I've ever hired showed up in a pickup with a magnet sign and a phone number in Comic Sans.

The work was fine. The brand didn't exist.

That's the opportunity in boring service businesses. Nobody competes on experience, so the first person who does owns the street.

If I started one, I'd call it Sill. Three plans, one crew, shoe covers on every job, and a card left on the counter when we're done.

And I wouldn't buy a van until 300 door hangers in one subdivision told me people would pay.

Concept brand, not a real company. Which overlooked business should I rebuild next? 👇
