I cannot be more grateful to all the forces for making this happen...crossing paths with Ima Sabitri, that too when Manipur is going through the most fragile times. Strength, beauty and playfulness...I get to be with this presence brimming with these energies everyday since the last two weeks. Life is good.

The best thing to happen this year: receiving this from Ima Sabitri's hands, being called by her as "Pebet Mother" and being trained and directed by her for this role. I can never forget her lessons not just in class, but in the kitchen, dining room and in corridors as we passed each other. She would just correct a pose or demonstrate a way to breath while calling out "Tetu". She is a force. Her spirit cannot be contained in a classroom. It spreads across the walls of Kalakshetra, keeping it alive for many more years to come.

Here I play Pebet Mother, immortalised by the one and only Ima Sabitri, the greatest thespian in India right now. I was nervous to do this, yet thrilled to play a character part of a classic play directed by Kanhaialal, the most original, rebellious and philosophical theatre person this country has ever seen.
But, Ima mentored me. She directed me, asked me to use my voice in ways I have never ever done, and she urged me to go ahead with it. 15 days of training with Kalakshetra Manipur culminated in this short segment of Pebet, a tribute piece which was the final part of a half an hour long presentation we participants had to do. I feel I breathed all the energy I had into this one or as they say here in Kalakshetra, I gave it all my "Thamoi", the spirit.

Some frames keep getting bigger, some stories too. Ninasam story is one such. Its such a deeply satisfying experience to perform at a space where such a discerning, culturally curious group of people congregate. It was also such a thrilling experience for me to have performed before my teachers at Ninasam who mentored me in 2019 when I interned at the course here.

There were such rich conversations around post modernity in contemporay theatre, the actor character divide, humour as a compelling device, subverting the melodrama and so on.

I carry with me all these conversations and I am sure its all going to feed into the play..

Shoorpanakha : A Search has finished its 7th show at Samskriti Shibira, the cultural festival, at Ninasam, one of the richest experiences ever for the play.

"Would you prefer an offbeat or a pause?"

Shoorpanakha: A Search will be staged at the prestigious Ninasam Samskruti Shibira, the annual cultural festival, that transforms the beautiful Heggodu into a melting pot of international discourses on art, culture and society.

I was trained in Ninasam in 2019, and I am honored to perform my solo work at my school again after seven years. Remembering all my teachers, classmates and the people of Heggodu, the intelligent art connoisseurs, I have not met anywhere else. I am grateful to perform before such a discerning and culturally rich community.

Thanks to Sharanya @sharanya.ramprakash my mentor for helping me find structure in my work and guiding me till the end on the making of the play. Thanks to all the trainers of the different art forms: P Rajagopal and Hanne M De Bruin @kattaikkuttusangam @hannemdebruin , Kalamandalam Rajeevan @kalamandalamrajeev, Aparna Nangiar @aparnanangiar, and Gangai master who trained me for this play. With learnings from you, I have tried to reimagine a phenomenonal mythical symbol and woman like Shoorpanakha who continue to haunt our conscience.

Night, walks.
How does the same street look different at night? Is it about the shadows in the dark? Do they turn alluringly beastly? The neon lamps and the tubes, they too glitter pregnant with meanings. Anyway, the whole ambience is delightfully ominious with a touch of sexiness.

Onam 2026. The day has been good. Walked, picked flowers, played with the petals, enjoyed the rains and spotted a peacock. Payasam fed, with an old Malayalam song playing on our lips, we have wrapped up our banana leaves to take a siesta. All peace.
Thanks to Bethlehem Kudumba Unit which I managed to catch yesterday night, got to discover this old Malayalam song. Cannot stop humming it now. Btw, Girish AD has delivered his usual hilarious, heartfelt fare again. It was the best holiday rom com watch!
