- A Transient Space To Return To -
paper mache, wood, ceramics, arduino, canvas, acrylic, textile

My senior thesis exhibition :’) It took me a little over a month after installation to fully process it. It was important to me to create such a large scale installation to truly instill the importance of marginalized voices to take up space and never be afraid to be diminished to anything less 🐚🌀🫶🏻

More about this work:
Imagine all the sights and sounds birds encounter below them: the ever-shifting forests, polluted cities, and the laughter and cries of voices. A human, too, is a bird — but one tethered by man-made desires such as money and power, navigating the many changes of life. Before we can define our meaning of home, we are children under our parents’ eyes. We arrive in a world without choosing our socioeconomic class, native tongue, or family structure. These random circumstances become the essence of who we are. These experiences within these tangible places showed us how to love, how to listen, how to speak, and how to move beyond these walls. If home resides in the people we love, where is home once they pass on? When human civilizations began, they would often stay fixated in one area, around the same group of people.

In Western society, we face constant pressure to evolve and relocate. For marginalized identities, El Sueño Americano, the so-called American Dream, remains fragile and often out of reach. For my thesis project, I use narrative-building as a tool of agency to navigate these transformations. My installation invites viewers to reflect on home as a transient state we carry within ourselves, reimagining belonging as a collective act—much like birds migrating together.

A Transient Space to Return To is an act of restoration and ancestral healing. Its framework is embedded within my personal experiences, from living in Peru to the U.S. It is composed of three main parts stemming from natural environments: (1) The Sea (2) The Land (3) The Sky.

Pearls Enveloped 𓇼🐚
inkjet on rice paper stitched on fabric, assorted fabrics

Created a short publication showcasing a capsule collection through an exploration of different fabric types and textures. As my process has become increasingly digital, I wanted to create something that brought me back to the physicality of materials ! (Analog 4ever) I used a sewing machine to stitch rice paper directly onto fabric, allowing readers to lift and flip each textile to reveal the material underneath :0

made a mini-dress up game 🗝️
- javascript + digital illustrations

various prints i submitted for the Free People design challenge almost a year ago ! for the challenge, the prompt was to design 3 patterns for a fall capsule collection— thus, i chose to create a floral collection that combines organic, delicate forms w/ more sturdier metal accents. thought i’d make it more fun by coding a mini dress up game where viewers can change the prints 🦭

Cyanotypes from my Senior Thesis Exhibition 🪟🪁

All cyanotypes were embedded on the exterior of my seashell sculpted house. Their presence functions not only as windows, but also time capsules to different places, writing, and various Peruvian textiles and motifs. Present, are also archival imagery collected throughout the making of the sculpture. Each image fades at a different opacity.

I love working with cyanotypes and utilizing the sun as a tool to shape the process. I also really enjoy how you never really know how it’ll turn out !

“The Sea” 🫧 (2/2) portion of my Senior Thesis Show
Porcelain ceramics

The Sea comprises six abstract porcelain figures surrounding the seashell home. It stands for those we love, those who lived before us, and those who are part of us but whom we will never physically meet. Thus, it was important to retain these figures without detailed features or to represent a specific individual; they protect while remaining vulnerable, and reclining forms suggest openness rather than defense. Above all, it prompts viewers to embrace our identity and to recognize that this shared vulnerability is essential to understanding.

“The Sky” 𓅪 portion of my Senior Thesis Exhibition
7 ft x 4 feet, acrylic and oil on canvas painted on both front + back, chiffon, textiles

Set of four scrolls hanging from the ceiling above my constructed seashell home. My thesis is divided into three parts, (1) The Land, (2) The Sky, and (3) The Sea. Each scroll displays a different narrative with personal imagery and Peruvian textiles. Interwoven throughout the compositions are images, both figurative and abstract, of the care and preservation embedded in hair practices. Industrial design furniture, such as plastic chairs, act as objects of connection, linking viewers across cultures. These scrolls also serve as a call to action with motifs highlighting the recent occuring events.

this project was sm labor, but truly healed many parts of me. also a special thanks to my grandma who has unconditionally supported me. excited to keep creating forever and ever. by @partofseas

Desde Aquí : From Here 𓏲ּ𝄢
Ceramics, Plexiglass, Arduino, & Yarn

a recreation of my childhood living room in Peru, this piece serves as both a memoir and an expression of a desire for simpler times :o) each corner of the room holds a distinct memory, etched with my illustrations onto plexiglass. the furniture draws from the textile patterns and color motifs that surrounded me. set on a continuous loop, the piece mirrors the transient nature of memory itself. this work was also on view at the undergrad annual this past month. also thank you to @sabajaboticaba for helping me configure the arduino!!

works about oranges, oranges about work 🍊

i’m v inspired by organic material so here is different works i made either using orange fruit bags and orange peels! bare w/ me for the long caption :p

(1) Home is a Person
fruit Bags, plaster casts of my hands, acrylic

This work reflects two themes: home existing in the people we love, and the tearing apart of the home as a result of the current political climate. Collecting and sewing together fruit bags became a method of reassembling a home once lost; an ever-growing epidemic of families being split. Furthermore, it also stands as a homage to the workers’ efforts in the service industry who are often not given the credit they deserve. This piece was also on view at the Stereotomy show last month curated by @lifeafterthisone, @ng_hiujan, @brenbrenhmann, & Henna.

(2) What am i if not a vessel
oil, orange peels, yarn

This piece reflects on the history of women perceived as symbolic of Mother Nature, and their purpose for reproduction as seen in religion and media. As a woman ages, her value is lessened as she loses the ability to be vessel for carrying children. The use of oranges and its decay works to make a parallel between these notions.

(3) Light Sleep

Inspired by the shape of cocoons, I really wanted to create a functional art piece.

Hydra and Bloom 𓆕 (2023)

This piece was a personal exploration and response to some occurrences in my life at the time surrounding loss and the duality of choice/lack of control. Also an experimentation of abstraction with figural representation. I would like to build the courage to share more of my paintings as they often collect dust lol🤞🏻
